Hi people,

This is my first post, and I already need help to read the death record for my ancestor Botilla Sophie Lorenzen, who died on 31.October 1826.  Her death is recorded in the parish records from Ensted, Lundtoft Aabenraa at the above date (took me a while to find because apparently no surname was given?)

Thanks in advance

The best way to note the source is
Ensted 1767-1850 Opslag 786 - then it can be found without a lot of searching in the church records

Botilla Sophie, en Ægtedatter af Lorens Hinrich
Lorentzen fra Jylland og Karen fra Loit, 1809 ...
Decbr. blev hun ægteviet til Christen Thomsen, en
Indster under G.J. [Gråsten jurisdiktion] i Stybbek. I dette Ægteskab avle-
des 3 Døttre, som endnu leve

BS born in wedlock, parents LH Lorenzen from Jylland and Karen from Løjt,
married Dec. 1809 (I can't read the date) Chr. Th., a
cottager under the jurisdiction of Gråsten manor (not Tønder county) in Stubbæk. In this marriage 3 daughters, who still live

And the church book doesn't mention her surname, as she probably was named after her husband's first name - in spite of the rule of fixed surnames from the 1770'ies.

Thank you Inger,  and I will try to use the format you suggested in future  Wink

Just another question regarding church records, there doesn't seem to be any standard format for recording the parish registers, some have a lot more information than others.

I am wondering whether an entry which does NOT say Ægtedatter/son would necessarily mean that the child is illegitimate?  I know that I have come across entries where it is stated that the child is illegitimate before, maybe some pastors were  more discrete than others?

Regards

James
