Hi-

I now know what town my family was living in according to census/church records.  Someday I would like to travel there but would love to know more, like where there house might have been or the land they lived/farmed on.  The time period of my family's whereabouts is from 1803 to 1883 roughly.  Is this even possible?  What records might have that kind of information?

Thanks!

Well, I know they were in Rudbøl, right on the border of Germany and Denmark.  Are there any old houses from that time period still there?  I saw that there is a restaurant there and some homes you can rent to stay at.  But would there be any way to know what house my relatives lived in or where their farm land may have been.  I'd love to "walk in their shoes" as much as possible if I were ever to fly there with family.

Does the Denmark census give any clues to where they lived?

Thanks!

You can find a number of Danish censuses here, not all yet: www.ddd.dda.dk and here: www.arkivalieronline.dk, but remember that the southern part of Denmark was occupied by Germany from 1864 - 1920.

Do the census' include an address to where people live or are the other types of records that include what land families owned at that time?

Thank you for clearing up when Germany owned Rudbol.  I'll have to look into German records too.

The 1901 census and later censuses has information about the cadastrel number of the house/property (in Danish: Matrikel Nummer).

You can use that number doing a look-up at http://www.ois.dk. That site contains information about all landed property in Denmark: Address, area of the plot of land, number of houses, size of the house, when it was built etc.

You have to know the 2007 municipality of the property. To find the 2007 municipality of a parish in the old census you could search for the parish (Danish: Sogn) in the Danish part of Wikipedia, http://da.wikipedia.org

At http://www.ois.dk Use "Avanceret søgning" (Advanced search)

Søgning via matrikelnummer (Searching by title number)
If you know the full cadastrel plot description:
  • Choose municipality under "Ejendomssøgning via matrikelnummer" (Property search through cadastral number).
  • Enter the name of the owner guild (ejerlav).
  • Enter the plot number (including letters).
  • Click "Search".
If you only know the plot number:
  • Choose municipality under "Ejendomssøgning via matrikelnummer" (Property search through cadastral number).
  • Enter the plot number (including letters).
  • Click "Search".
There now appears a list of all ejerlav in the selected municipality.
You must now select the ejerlav you think is right.
Note that if you can not recognize the right ejerlav in list
the system will probably not find the desired property.
If you know the owner guild (ejerlav):
  • Choose municipality under "Ejendomssøgning via matrikelnummer" (Property search through cadastral number).
  • Enter ejerlavet's name. You can just enter a part of ejerlavet's name
  • Click "Search".
All ejerlav in the municipality that match the search are displayed

There are other ways. http://www.kms.dk/Sepaakort/  contains historic maps and what you need is historic matrikelkort. You have to know the place/village/parish and period, then you can find the map where your ancestors lived and if you are lucky you can see their name on the land they farmed. It has a number and that is also at the farmbuildings in the village, so it takes a bit of work to figure out. Then if you are lucky you may find the property on the current map. There is a function with past and present. The church is a sure thing for orientation, since they go way back. I hope this helps. Since your ancestors left you may search for familynames/members but remember the custom with patronyms, so you also have to know about that too. - Good luck.

I just tried what I suggested to you and it looks like the maps are not online yet Cry, but will be. Don´t give up, the more you find out now, the easier it will be later on.

I grew up 10 km north to Rudbøl and know the area quite well. Yes there are a lot of old houses from the period 1850 to 1900 and maybe older. I have a book with photos of all the old houses in Rudbøl and official land registration numbers (matrikelnummer). The problem is to identify the house or farm with the right land registration number.

In general the danish censuses do not comprise land registration numbers. Road names and house numers were only used in cities of a certain size and not in the country. The families are only listed in the census by a consecutive family numbers and these numbers are not the same for different censuses.

So you need some additional information about your family to be able to identify the right house. Censuses might provide a relative placing of the house e.g. the next family after the grocer. If you then know where the grocers store was placed at that time you have a chance.

As far as I know there are no census available from the period 1864 to 1920. Only the church records can help in this period.

hi Jhannea. There are old censuses from that time Sønder Jutland was German, but they do not exist on the Internet. You can only look at the Provincial Archives in Åbenrå. There is two and I think one is from 1845, the other I can not remember when it was from.

Thank you to all of you for your feedback! I plan to look at each of your responses more and do some more digging!
Ebbe! That is really neat that you are so close to there.  Smiley Did you hear of the family name Frandsen or Fransen ever in that area?  That is my family.

Hi Jhannea

I left the area in 1969, so unfortunately I mainly remember families by my school friends first name.

Take a look at this link for Højer cemetry gravestones pictures:

http://www.findengrav.dk/

Click on "Højer nye Kirkegård" under "Jylland" and click on "F" and you will find gravestones for both Frandsen and Franzen in Rudbøl.

I have also attached a copy of a page from a 1993 directory from Højer municipality. All Frandsen and Franzen names are located in Højer none in the village Rudbøl.

Best regards, Ebbe
