I would request people's help to identify/read a line from the Aarhus Domsogn register, 1729-2800 opsl 643. Left hand column during September.

I think it says "ditto Niels Elmoses  ? ? ?"

What sort of a record is this (christening, death or whatever else) and what does the rest of the line record?

I was originally trying to confirm a christening for my direct ancestor Niels Nielsen Elmose, which the IGI tells me that took place on August 13, 1779

I could not find any record from that date, but accidentally came across this instead..

Many thanks

James

Hi James.

It says: "ditto Niels Elmoses Enke (widow)".

It's a record saying, that she had her first church-visit after giving birth.

Your reply is much appreciated Jens!

What was the purpose of those visits?  I believe the baby was already christened, and the father Niels snr died about a month beforehand.

I suppose I need to go back and try to find the christening entry again.  Strange that I could not find it before...

cheers from Australia

Hi James.

The first church-visit was continuation from the Middleage, where women vere seen as un-clean in 40 days after giving birth.
It was not any longer seen as unclean, but she was anyway introduced to church after usually 6 weeks after giving birth with a thanks-praying for giving birth.

Thanks for explaining that Jens, and finding the right page Mette.

Would anyone care to transcribe the line?  I find these incredibly hard to read..
