In the DDD 1880 Census when I search for A% C% M%, I get the following for my 2nd GreatGrandparents:
Thisted, Hundborg, Thisted Købstad, Under Østerbakke, , 157, Forhus, 606, FT-1880
Name: Age: Marital status: Occupation in household: Occupation: Birth place: Anders Christian Mikkelsen 50 Gift Skibsfører (ship navigator), Husfader Østerild Sogn, Thisted Amt Ellen Mikkelsen 49 Gift hans Kone, Husmoder Sennels Sogn, Thisted Amt Christian Mikael Mikkelsen 17 Ugift deres Søn, Skibsdreng Thisted Elvira Kathrine Mikkelsen 15 Ugift deres Datter Thisted Jens Christian Christensen 8 Ugift deres Pleiesøn (their FOSTER son) Thisted
The record indicates Jens Christian Christensen as their FOSTER child. Where can one find information on foster children, e.g. are there formal documents, court records, etc?
I am interested in finding out who this individual is. Is he a family member taken in by Anders and Ellen?
Were there rules on being foster parents? or could one do this out of the goodness of their heart?
Thanking you in advance.......

You asked "Is he a family member taken in by Anders and Ellen? Were there rules on being foster parents? or could one do this out of the goodness of their heart?"
I don't know the rules or where to find them.
I do know a "foster child" can be a child who is related. I have grgr-grandparents with a "foster child" grandchild living with them.
I also have seen in this forum and elsewhere that a foster child might NOT be related. Denmark had a system for taking care of children in need of a home, and at least for some of Danish history, the foster parents were paid for this (as I have heard Danish elders discuss it). Some families liked to have foster children because of the extra income and extra help around the place.
What is the case for this boy? To know, one must first find out who he is - as you can see, that's happening.

The confirmation for this Jens is: Thisted, Hundborg, Thisted 1883-1891, ops 298, #34
This led me to his birth and christening: Thisted, Hundborg, Thisted 1870-1882, ops 19 #28
I defer to those kind people on this board who are adept in Danish to provide the transcription and translation. Mvh Janice
