I have an ancestor, Jens (Christian) Christensen, age 28, who was enumerated in the 1850 Census for Fjellerad By, Gunderup sogn, Aalborg amt.  He was identified as: "deres Søn, fraværende i krigstienste."  I cannot locate him after 1850.

Would he have been serving in the military?
If so, is there a way to find out if he may have been a casualty in the War of 1848-1850?

Best wishes, Rog Nelson

Hi Rog,

Yes, it indicates that he joined the war service.
At http://www.dr.dk/nr/rdonlyres/640de090-2cad-4e01-ba98-13ef5e3d019e/2670215/register_faldne_1.pdf
is an index with killed soldiers in the wars 1848-51 and 1864.

It should be possible to follow him in the military register (lægdsrulle) from his birth until ca 1860.
You need birth parish, birth year and fathers name.

Go to https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/other/index/4 and choose
Generalkrigskommissariatet angående Udskrivningsvæsenet   Lægdsruller (1789 - 1864)
If he is born 1822, he should be in Ålborg 1823 J Hovedrulle (lægd 1-50)
At image 3 you see that Gunderup parish is lægd nr.37.
The number of the 'lægd' is at the top of each page, and lægd 37 starts at image 315
The columns are:
old no - new no* - fathers and sons name - sons birthplace - age - hight (inches) - actual adress - notes/remarks (vedtegninger)
And in this last column is mentioned his military 'career' etc.
And to understand all the abbreviations you need help !

*The new number is his number in the next 'Hovedrulle' 3 years later in 'lægd' 37.
