Are military records online?  Where can I search these?

Helmer Christiansen

Danish Military Levying Rolls (Lægdsruller) is a key topic at familysearch.org.

There are rolls of potential conscripts from the late 1700s to 1932 online at https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/collection/theme/3?

Until the first Schleswig war (1848-1850) only farmers' sons were included the conscription. It was only during the first Schleswig war that the sons of the rest of the population became subject to conscription.

Thanks for the tip Helmer.  I was able to locate the registration for when he turned 18.  Can someone please help me translate.

I am looking for what is written under "Father or Mother's rank and name", and then what is written under "Vedtegninger"

The this is my 2 times great grandmothers's brother.  He is the first one listed on the page - Hjalmar Fernando Frederiksen

Hi Trisha.

As I read it:

afd. Hovmester Jens P. H. F.

(department steward (on a ship) Jens P. H. F.)

ansat med offentlig arbejde

(hired with pulic work)

Hope it helps

Trisha Weathers

This does help, thanks Tobias.

Does this mean he was hired into the military to do public work?

Trisha Weathers

Also, does anyone know what the stamp "Afsked 1930" stands for?

Tobias Kjeldsen

To be honest, then I don't know, but I woould think so.
Afsked 1930 means that he was dismissed in 1930 (nothing bad)

It seems that public work in this case means Tvangsarbejde (Tvangsarb.) 'forced labour, hard labour'

The levying roll you've found is the one kept by the central authorities. I found Hjalmar in the roll kept by the local authorities in Copenhagen:

https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=16504374#28978,3213206 - right page

https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=16504370#51349,11391044 - left page, No 773

He was convicted several times for theft (Tyveri) and begging (Betleri).
In 1916 eight months imprisonment (Forbhusarb. = Forbedringshusarbejde) for blackmail (Pengeafpresning).
In 1919 three years imprisonment for theft.

It's also noted that he didn't turn up at sessions (§ 13).

Discharged 1930 (without military service).

In the Copenhagen Police Census Records:
http://www.politietsregisterblade.dk/component/sfup/?controller=politregisterblade&task=viewRegisterblad&id=1547557&searchname=polit_adv

Nov. 1913: http://www.kbharkiv.dk/kildeviser/#!?collection=2&item=7111713 - bottom
- he's a worker (Arbejdsmand), and in May 1913 he was at sea (Sejlet).

I think that afd. Hovmester means deceased Hovmester

I agree - Afd. Hovmester  'Deceased steward'. He is here in the 1890 census:

An answer to your question from 2013 in https://www.slaegtogdata.dk/forum/index.php/topic,26246.30.html :

The burial record for Hjalmar's mother Ane Kirstine: http://www.kbharkiv.dk/kildeviser/#!?collection=5&item=143451 - No 1480
- cause of death: St. puerperalis, Embolia art. pulm.

Vor Frue church: https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17119867#159001,26727976 - No 23

The burial record for Jens Peter Hans Frederiksen: http://www.kbharkiv.dk/kildeviser/#!?collection=5&item=144053 - No 5047
- cause of death: Presumably fracture of the skull.

Sankt Matthæus church: https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17118435#156058,26123145 - No 428

They both died at Kommunehospitalet (K H) and were buried at Vestre Kirkegaard:

This is amazing.  Not so much the theft and blackmail, but still tells a story that we had no idea of.

I know that his father Jens worked on a ship, and both of his parents died in 1899.  Inger, I was able to find their death information, but thank you for helping, as I didn't have all of those records.  My G-Grandmother Elly, Hjalmar's sister, traveled to America when she was 13.  So we have been trying to find out what happened to her family in Denmark, and have recently been focusing on Hjalmar to see if I could find his story.

I am also looking into his grandfather Lars, and his family.  I have gotten his parents name, Frederik and Margrethe Jensdatter, but that is as far as I have gotten with them, since I have been focusing elsewhere recently.

Interesting thought that you say they are buried at Vestre Cemetery.  I thought their burial record said they were buried in Assistens Cemetery.  Are you able to confirm they are in Vestre?

I will be diving more into Hjalmar tonight, so if anyone has suggestions of other places to look to piece together his story, please let me know.  My parents will also be traveling to Denmark next year, and will be doing some research. Please let me know if their are any library's or other places they can go to talk with someone that will be able to help in researching our family.

Ass. Kirkg. is preprinted in the burial protocols, but the actual burial site is the handwritten one.

Jens P H Frederiksen's death record in Sankt Matthæus confirms that: Buried 18 August V K [Vestre Kirkegaard].

I was searching on Familysearch.org, and I couldn't find anything.

This is great information, thank you for your help!  :D :D :D

Hjalmar's death is also recorded in Sankt Paul - the church he was buried from:

https://www.danishfamilysearch.dk/sogn660/churchbook/source21439/opslag4346384 - bottom

Maybe somebody with access to MyHeritage could find him in censuses 1921 - 1930?
