I have very little information regarding my Great-Great-Grandfather, Richard Jacobsen. I have a photo that I obtained from a family reunion about 40 years ago of him dressed in a uniform (attached), taken just before he left Denmark for a new life in Australia. He was 19. It has now been confirmed by Rigskarkivet that it is the uniform of the Danish Royal Life Guard.

He migrated to Sydney in 1869 where he became a Police Officer for the New South Wales Police until his retirement at around age 65. I have seen a copy of the NSW Police Gazette which congratulates him for a long career. He married an English woman named, Elizabeth.

I have no further information but I will be taking my first ever trip to Europe in May and have set aside a week for Denmark to explore, soak up the culture and, hopefully, find some more information about my Danish ancestor.

This forum was suggested to my by Rigskarkivet. If anybody can offer any leads, I would be most grateful.

My candidate for Richard Jacobson:

Rasmus Jacobsen born 10. Jan. 1850 in Overby Village, As Parish, Vejle County.
Christening record: https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/billedviser?bsid=159779#159779,26864088
Parents were Jacob Rasmussen and Marie Kirstine Nielsdatter (Nielsen).

At the time of his confirmation, April 1864, he lived in the city of Horsens abt. 15 km from his birth parish.  The confirmation record erroneously lists his father as Rasmus Jacobsen (based on a note from the pastor in As Parish), but place and date of birth are correct:
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/billedviser?bsid=164493#164493,27630168

The military levying roll from 1866 shows that he lived in Horsens city:
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/billedviser?epid=16480943#27633,2944406
Place and date of birth fit - fathers name still "upside down".
Further information copied from the levying roll:
Height: 68 ¼ (Danish) inches (178.5 cm)
Unit:  F. G.  = Royal Palace Guard (at Foot)
Service: Nov. 1869 - 28. Sep. 1870
Remark:  In 1871 emigrated to "America" [I have seen this term used several times when the person in reality ended up in Australia or New Zealand.  This information was normally given to the authorities by family or friends after the emigration.  They might not have known the actual destination, or they hid their information on purpose]

However, the emigration record from Copenhagen reveals that he left for Australia:
Name:    Jacobsen, Rasmus
Occupation:    Worker
Age:    21
Destianation:    Queensland, Australia
Contract nr.:    134800
Date:    02-05-1871
Last living in:   Horsens city, Aarhus County
Name of ship: Indirect [likely via an English port]
ID code:    I7172J0501

NB: This record proves only that he bought a ticket in Copenhagen with Queensland (Brisbane?) as first Australian destination.

Some websites have him as
- "Richard Nelson Jacobson".
- DOB given as 10. Jan. 1850.
- serving with NSW Artillery before 1875
- born in Heligoland

I recommend that you check the immigration records for Australia covering 1871.

The Reichstag seems to have left Hamburg on 17 April 1872.

I don't think he is in the Danish emigration database.

I have a candidate here:
Hans Jacobsen born out of wedlock on 18th June 1839 in Egense parish, Svendborg amt.  Mother: Kirsten Jørgensdatter daughter of Jørgen Nielsen Juul, Egense. Alleged father: Bachelor Jacob Hansen in Kynderup.

The child is living with his grandparents in census 1840 and 1845 et least. Jørgen Nielsen Juul died on 30th Nov. 1848 in Egense. Probably the child went to live somewhere else because he was not confirmed in Egense.

But did this Hans Jacobsen go to Australia? It is not Horsens.  Maybe somebody can find him in the military rolls.
