Hej, I am trying to find Caroline Schmidt. She had a son, Jens, around 1833, possibly in Copenhagen.
I have been unsuccessfully looking for son Jens for a long time, but noticed on his forst marriage, Melbourne Australia in 1856, that his parents are listed as John, Caroline Smith, which made me think that perhaps only his mother's last name was Smith (or a variation of it) and that looking for a Johan Schmidt married to a Caroline was not the right approach.
I also note that the marriage was according to the Catholic rite. Jens's wife was Irish. In those days, did both parties have to be Catholic to be married in the Catholic Church? If so, where can I find Catholic Danish records as maybe that is where I mght be able to track this family down. The marriage information did say Copenhagen as to where Jens was from, but of course, he may have been born elsewhere. I am also wondering what variations there are for the name Schmidt/Smith? He has signed his name as Scmit once or twice.
Any help or ideas would be much appreciated.
Påforhånd tak!

I googled a bit and found your old thread on Jens S. This "Old Bold which isn't Denmark any more" could it be Oldenburg in Schleswig-Holstein? Oldenborg in Danish.

Also an old thread of yours:

Hi George
There was no Catholic chuch in Denmark in 1833 - it was not before after the new constitutional law of 1848 that the catholica church was allowed  and no church was etablished before the 1860ies.
I think, you should assume that Jens must have been baptished in the Danishh luteran church.

Thanks Eva - that is a very good suggestion - I will follow it up.
Ellen - thanks for that information - he must have converted for marriage in that case. Wonder if there will be any Australian records of that.
Paul - Smidt is a good possibility too!
