Dear co-searchers,

I am trying to find the first migrants of the Sietam-family in the States.

1:I know for a fact, that the Sietam-family originally comes from Germany.
2: I have found an Ellis Island ship manifest for a Wilhelmina Sietam from 1893. She leaves from Burg, Germany and her destination is Iowa.
3: She is 16 years old and travels alone.

4: I have found a Wilhelmina Sietam at familysearch.org but can not se anything further than that she changed her name in marriage to Althof.

5: There are many Sietams in the States, but if she changed her name, and they did not come via ellis Island, where did they register then? Is there any possible way to find out?

We are in contact with Sietams in Pennesylvania now, but they can not help with any details.

How do I find more details about this Family now. Where do I begin?

I really hope that someone can give me the missing link.

Kind regards

Christina Sietam

Hi Christina,

Here are some Sietams in the transcribed Danish records

http://www.ddd.dda.dk/soeg_person_enkel_uk.asp

and  http://www.ddd.dda.dk/soeg_person_enkel_uk.asp

and  http://www.ddd.dda.dk/soeg_person_enkel_uk.asp

These parts of Denmark were lost to Germany in a war of 1864.

Hi Christina,

I wonder if this is your Wilhelmina?  http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=pv&GRid=73496531&PIpi=45570818

Sincerely,
Paul

Not your Wilhelmina.  According to the 1920 census, Minnie came to the US in 1882.

Hi Christina,

Found a 1923 Iowa marriage where the groom's (John Clarence Althof) father is Louis Althof and his mother is Minnie Sietam. The file is to large for me to post here but if you give me your e-mail address I will send it to you.  After more research I think the grave that I found is of Wilhelmina and the 1920 census had the wrong date  of her coming to the USA.  I am sure the 1920 census is your Wilhelmina.

Try this  https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&englishSubcountryName=Iowa&query=%2Bgivenname%3AMinnie%20%2Bsurname%3AAlthof%20%2Brecord_country%3A%22United%20States%22%20%2Brecord_subcountry%3A%22United%20States%2CIowa%22

Once again Hi,

I don't have access to the German records on ancestry.com but the 1851 Lübeck census there is a Johannes Sietam born about 1833 in Burg auf Fehmarn.  Both Wilhelmina and Charles's father is listed as Johannes Sietam in the American records.  Note that in the 1893 manifest for Wilhelmina she is from Burg.

You can order the microfilm of the Burg auf Fehmarn church records from a Mormon Family History Center.  https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/69994?availability=Family%20History%20Library

http://www.libertyellisfoundation.org/ellis-island-history

"Prior to 1890, the individual states (rather than the Federal government) regulated immigration into the United States. Castle Garden in the Battery (originally known as Castle Clinton) served as the New York State immigration station from 1855 to 1890 and approximately eight million immigrants, mostly from Northern and Western Europe, passed through its doors.....The Federal government intervened and constructed a new Federally-operated immigration station on Ellis Island. While the new immigration station on Ellis Island was under construction, the Barge Office at the Battery was used for the processing of immigrants.

The new structure on Ellis Island, built of "Georgia pine" opened on January 1, 1892."

I did a search at Castle Garden http://castlegarden.org/index.php - but only came up with Hans Sietan (arr. 1872),
Carl Sietam (arr. 1884), Hubert Sietam (arr. 1891), and Wilhelmine Sietam (arr.1893).

It seems that the surname of Hans Sietan, who immigrated 1872, was Zietan:

United States Census, 1900: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQM8-VT8

I cannot find any later info about Hubert Sietam, who immigrated 1891.

So there are at least these male Sietams immigrating from Germany:

- Carl F. Sietam (b. 1869), immigration year 1884, who had the sons
   - Loyd (b. around 1900)
   - Karl (b. around 1912)

- Johannes Sietam (b. 1867), immigration year 1889 (according to 1920 census), who had the sons
   - Fred (b. around 1897)
   - Endos(?) (b. around 1900)
   - William (b. around 1901)
   - Emil (b. around 1905)
   - Harry (b. around 1907)
   - Frank (b. around 1909)
   - Harry (b. around 1910)

- Fredrick Sietam (b. 1828), immigration year before 1860, who had the sons
  - Christian (b. around 1854)
  - Henry (b. around 1858)

Christian Sietam is here:

United States Census, 1900: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MS15-5DB

Christian Sietam    Head    M    45    Pennsylvania

Kære Paul og Inger,

tusind tak for jeres store hjælp begge to.

Name    Louis Friedrich Althof
Event Type    Marriage
Event Date    01 Apr 1894
Event Place    Gladbrook, Tama, Iowa, United States
Gender    Male
Age    27
Birth Year (Estimated)    1867
Father's Name    Friedr. L. Chr. Althof
Mother's Name    Sophie C. Chr./Therman
Spouse's Name    Anna Emilie Wilhelmine Sietam
Spouse's Gender    Female
Spouse's Age    19
Spouse's Birth Year (Estimated)    1875
Spouse's Father's Name    Johann Sietam
Spouse's Mother's Name    Anna Schultz

i samme søskendeflok:

Name    Johannes Sietain
Birth: 1867 Burch-Schlaswig Holstein Ger

Event Type    Marriage
Event Date    20 Mar 1893
Event Place    Des Moines, Polk, Iowa, United States
Gender    Male
Age    26
Birth Year (Estimated)    1867
Father's Name    Johannes Sietain
Spouse's Name    Christina Brandt
Spouse's Gender    Female
Spouse's Age    23
Spouse's Birth Year (Estimated)    1870
Spouse's Father's Name    Heinrich Brandt

Jf. http://www.genealogy.com/ftm/k/o/s/John-S-Kostick/COL56-1704.html - hvor der desværre ikke står noget
