Hej

Can someone please tell me if the old census addresses would still be the same address today?

For example, in the 1834 census, Hansine Poulsen lived at Svendborg, Langelands Nørre, Rudkøbing Købstad, Rudkøbing Kobstad, Strandgade, Nr. 31 with her parents.

I think I can see that address on google maps at:

https://www.google.com.au/maps/place/Strandgade+31,+5900+Rudkøbing,+Denmark/@54.9383157,10.7109969,112m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x47b2ca043b39988d:0xb587554169831958!8m2!3d54.9383126!4d10.7112759

I also found an address for Morten Jensen Kjær in the 1834 census as Svendborg, Langelands Nørre, Rudkøbing Købstad, Rudkobing Kobstad, Grønnegade, Nr. 114 F1 with his parents.

I think I can see that address also on google maps at:

https://www.google.com.au/maps/dir//Grønnegade+114,+5900+Rudkøbing,+Denmark/@54.9370728,10.7082655,893m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m16!1m7!3m6!1s0x47b2ca0412e14013:0x5b42f3853492962e!2sGrønnegade+114,+5900+Rudkøbing,+Denmark!3b1!8m2!3d54.9370697!4d10.7104595!4m7!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x47b2ca0412e14013:0x5b42f3853492962e!2m2!1d10.7104595!2d54.9370697

I had a previous post about Hansine Poulsen and Morten Jensen Kjær at:

https://www.slaegtogdata.dk/forum/index.php/topic,81214.0.html

I would love to visit these houses especially if they are where my ancestors may have once lived.

Blindestræde No 332 is probably the cadastre number, not the street number.

In Copenhagen, street numbers were introduced around 1860. I don't know when they were introduced in Rudkøbing,
neither how to transform the old cadastre numbers to street numbers.

At the top of this map from 1869, you find Blindestræde (nowadays called Strandgade):

I tried to look up the original 1834 and 1840 censuses, but all I got for FT-1834 was "Image not found",
and for FT-1840 this: https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=5822#5822,133587

I've reported the errors.

I think I found Jørgen Poulsen's house i Brogade in the "Register for Conveyance and Mortgage Minutes of the Market Town Rudkøbing" http://ao.salldata.dk/vis1.php?bsid=175563&side=16

It contains information of the new cadastre number, 263. On http://www.ois.dk you can make a lookup of the property with cadastre number 263 in Rudkøbing (Langelands Kommune). Present day address: Brogade 22. The present house on the plot was built in 1924.

Jørgen Poulsen bought his house 1822-09-17   (#2483, folio 134, http://ao.salldata.dk/vis1.php?bsid=175555&side=136)

There is also information about a "Bilbrev" (document about the building of a ship). Jørgen Poulsen together with Christen Clausen had a contract with ship carpenter master Niels Rasmussen to build the yacht "Mercurius" of Rudkøbing in 1844. http://ao.salldata.dk/vis1.php?bsid=175557&side=323

It seems that Hansine's parents didn't move in the period between FT-1834 and FT-1840, as Jørgen Poulsen
bought the house at Brogade No 31 in 1822. The number would have changed from 31 to 13, as seen in the
first document supplied by Helmer Christiansen.

The FT-1834 streets in Rudkøbing are listed here: http://ao.salldata.dk/index.php?type=ft-amt&n1=Svendborg&n2=Langeland+N%C3%B8rre&n3=Rudk%C3%B8bing+k%C3%B8bstad&n4=1834  - no Brogade.

The FT-1845 streets here: http://ao.salldata.dk/vis1.php?bsid=7615&side=1 - no Strandgade.

Data for FT-1840 still not available at AO.

Present-day Strandgade was formerly called Blindestræde.

Thanks Helmer and Inger.

Can I also ask you about the house at Brogade No. 31, which would have become Brogade No. 13?

Is Brogade No. 13 likely to still be there today?  The Hotel Scandinavian is currently located at Brogade No. 13, and it was meant to have been built in the 1800s.

Do you think it is likely this hotel is where Jørgen lived?

Hi Hansine,

Sorry if I confused you by mentioning the change from No. 31 to No. 13.

It seems the cadastre number had changed from 31 to 13 between 1834 and 1840, and later again to 263.

As Helmer Christiansen pointed out, the present-day address for cadastre No. 263 is Brogade 22, and the
house at that address was built 1924.

Best regards,
Inger
