Hi Roger

The link you have to the immigration database:

http://ddd.dda.dk/udvandrer/udvandr_soeg.asp?navn=Nielsen%2C+S%C3%B8ren&stilling=&alder=&sidste_oph_sted=&s_sogn=&s_oph_amt=&best_by=&best_stat=&best_land=&kontraktens_nr=127600&aar=&maaned=

shows a "Søren Nielsen" who came from Dover in Skanderborg county.
The age matches your ancestor, but do you have any other information that makes you sure that this is the right Søren Nielsen?

I can see a family tree on Ancestry, where Søren Nielsen matches the following grave:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Nielson&GSfn=Soren&GSbyrel=all&GSdy=1926&GSdyrel=in&GSob=n&GRid=167477970&df=all&

Is this your ancestor? If so, why does the headstone say "Søren R. Nielson", what does "R." stand for?

Søren Nielsen born in 1861 in Gummerup did not have any middle name.

Best regards
Søren

Hi Søren

All records in Denmark and the U.S. confirm that I have the correct Søren Nielson b. 1861 in Gummerup, d. 14 Mar. 1926 in Racine, Racine County, Wisconsin. Søren is my grandfather. Census records in the U.S. and Denmark, the departure, and ship's manifest, and his naturalization documents also confirm that he is my Søren. Søren Nielsen departed Denmark in 1883 and traveled to Racine, Wisconsin where he lived all his life.

My nephew posted the tree on Ancestry.com and did not correct it.  He no longer has access to Ancestry.

You are correct, Søren Nielsen b. 1861 did not have a middle initial or middle name. I believe the person, probably my great aunt, who purchased the gravestone about 80 years ago incorrectly added the middle initial 'R' to his name when the marker was ordered. To verify that I recently re-checked every record for Søren here and in Denmark to see if I had missed it somewhere.  I wanted to determine if he had a middle initial.  I could not find one.  I re-checked all his original records, including his marriage record, the birth records of his children, his death record, obituary, funeral home records, cemetery records and the membership records from the Danish Brotherhood in America.  I also re-checked his baptismal and confirmation records in Denmark again.

As you can see, I can not find him in 1880.

Best wishes,
Rog

Hi Rog

Do you have a link to the ship manifest showing his arrival to the US ?

Søren,

The above from castlegarden.org has the details from the passenger manifest from the SS California.  Arrival: 23 May 1883 at Castle Garden, New York, aboard the SS California.

I have a copy of the departure list for the California from the Port of Hamburg, Germany to New York on 6 May 1883 but I can't provide the link.  I do not have access to Ancestry at this time, but it has a limited amount of information in it.

Naturalization records here reported arrival May 1883, New York, born 1861, address: Racine, Racine County, Wisconsin.  The same information for him is found in the book "Germans to America."  The book contains many non-Germans because all persons leaving from German ports were included in that book.

I hope that is of some help.

Kindest regards,
Rog Nelson

Hi Rog,

I have looked a little at the departure list for the California. Image attached for other interested.

It seems to say that Søren Nielsen (number 1114 on the list) is from the same location as the people above, namely Tullebølle on Langeland.

Looking in the immigration database, I can see all the Petersens from Tullebølle:

http://ddd.dda.dk/udvandrer/udvandr_soeg.asp?navn=Petersen&stilling=&alder=&sidste_oph_sted=&s_sogn=Tulleb&s_oph_amt=&best_by=&best_stat=&best_land=&kontraktens_nr=&aar=1883&maaned=

But Søren Nielsen, and the 2 persons just above him seem to be wrongly marked as coming from the same place:

Jacob Jacobsen, age 20:
http://ddd.dda.dk/udvandrer/udvandr_soeg.asp?navn=Ja_obsen%2C+Ja_ob&stilling=&alder=20&sidste_oph_sted=&s_sogn=&s_oph_amt=&best_by=&best_stat=&best_land=&kontraktens_nr=&aar=1883&maaned=

Eliese Jensen, age 24: I can't find a good match for her in the immigration database.

Please note that there is a second Søren Nielsen, age 22, in the immigration database departing in 1883:
http://ddd.dda.dk/udvandrer/udvandr_soeg.asp?navn=Nielsen%2C+S%C3%B8ren&stilling=&alder=&sidste_oph_sted=&s_sogn=&s_oph_amt=K%C3%B8benhavn&best_by=&best_stat=&best_land=&kontraktens_nr=&aar=1883&maaned=

but his destination is not entered as Racine. However his registration date matches the date for all the Petersens from Tullebølle, and they are all going to Racine.

All this said, I have not been able to find Søren Nielsen in the 1880 census.

What did Søren Nielsen do for a living in Racine?
The 2 Søren Nielsen from the immigration database are Kommis (salesman) and the other Gartner (gardener).

Best regards
Søren

Hi  Søren,

Søren first worked as a farmer in Racine County.  He later worked in a foundry and still later owned and worked in candy store before 1920.  From 1920 to 1925 he and his wife, my grandmother, owned a farm in Racine County.  Sometime between 1920 and 1925 he returned to work in a Racine factory, Horlick's Malted Milk Company.

I suppose Søren, the gartner, could be my Søren but I have assumed that the one with the Racine destination was the correct one.

Thanks for your help.  Maybe I will have to give up on the 1880 census.  He may have worked outside of Denmark for a time.  The Levying Rolls do not report that he left his home parish.

Best wishes,
Rog
