Páll Hilmarsson

Hej!

Undskyld mig for at skrive på engelsk, min skriftlige dansk er ikke så god!

My name is Páll Hilmarsson. I am a 39 year old Icelander.

I'm researching my great-great grandfather Rasmus Petersen, born in 1836.

In the Icelandic census for the year 1860, he is listed having a residence at the Örum & Wulf house in Eskifjörður on the east coast of Iceland. His occupation is 'beykir' (or bödker in danish) and his age is given as 24. Örum & Wulf were Danish merchants who were quite prominent for a long time in Iceland, especially on the east coast.

(Here is the census entry: http://manntal.is/leit/Rasmus%20Petersen/1860/1/1860/63446)

At the same time that Rasmus was with Örum & Wulf in Eskifjörður, there was a 33 year old woman living there, Ingibjörg Einarsdóttir.

A year later, in July 1861, she gives birth to a daughter that is named Juliana Rasmusdóttir. The daughter of Rasmus Petersen.

Not much more is known about this Rasmus Petersen. Some documents state that he went back to Copenhagen in 1861 or 1862.

Ingibjörg, my great-great-great grandmother never married, never had any more children.

Her daughter, Júlíana Rasmusdóttir (who sometimes wrote here name Júlíana Rasmusdóttir Petersen), had 9 children, one of them: Kristín Elsabet Ásmundsdóttir was my great grandmother.
Kristín Elsabet had 7 children, one of them my grandmother Vigdís Júlíana Björnsdóttir.

I've always wanted to know more about this mysterious Rasmus, who fathered my great-great grandmother, and then disappeared back to Copenhagen.
On a whim I started looking into the Danish censuses, but as you can imagine, it's not exactly hard finding a Rasmus Petersen in Denmark!

But.

One Rasmus Petersen in the Danish 1860 census caught my eye because he had an Icelandic wife. The entry is here: http://www.danishfamilysearch.com/cid14812112
When I looked up them up in the 1870 census, his wife, Ingibjörg Petersen is also listed with her maiden name, Ingbjörg Óladóttir: http://www.danishfamilysearch.com/cid9265631
When I looked her up in Icelandic records on www.islendingabok.is, she is listed as having lived in Reykjafjörður, Iceland in 1858, where she married a Danish man named Rasmus Petersen. She is listed as having moved to Denmark in 1859.
Their daughter, Sofie Juliane Petersen, is listed as being born in Reykjafjörður in 1858.

I thought it a strange coincidence that in 1859 there was in Reykjafjörður, Iceland a bödker named Rasmus Petersen (born in 1835 or 1836) and then a year later, another bödker named Rasmus Petersen is in Eskifjörður, Iceland (born in 1835 or 1836).

You might have noticed that the Rasmus Petersen who was married to Ingibjörg Petersen and lived at Wildersgade, No 100 in Christianshavn in the 1860 Danish census can not be the same Rasmus Petersen who was working for Örum & Wulf in Eskifjörður in the Icelandic 1860 census.

But there is a catch.

The Danish census of 1860 was done in February. The Icelandic 1860 census was done in October.

So my theory is that Rasmus Petersen moved to Copenhagen in 1859 with his wife, Ingibjörg Óladóttir and their daughter, Sophie Juliane.
In the summer of 1860, he went back to Iceland, working for Örum & Wulf, were he fathered my great-great grandmother, Júlíana Rasmusdóttir.

If anyone can assist me in proving or disproving this theory, then I'd be very grateful.

I'm specially interested in knowing if there exists any records from Örum & Wulf for that time period.

Interesting problem, but not one easy to solve.

The Rasmus Petersen you found on the 1870 Census was born in Store Magleby 3 May 1836, and died in Store Magleby 6 Apr 1924.

Here is the family on the 1901 Census, Store Magleby

That's all I have time for now.

Here is the death 1913 of Ingebjørg Oladottir Petersen, born Viborg, telling that her husbond Rasmus Pedersen was a Bødker.

The son Jens Peter Oluf Petersen was born 24 Dec 1859 in Kbh Vor Frelsers sogn and baptized 5 Feb 1860 just after the census was taken, https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17119859#158843,26687316.  He was confirmed in Store Magleby in 1874 https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17118823#156917,26313524

If you search the DDD for Rasmus Pe in Store Magleby, any year, you will find him on the 1840, 1870, 1880, 1890, 1901 and 1921 censuses.  You will also see in the results of the search, that someone has added comments such as "Rasmus Pedersen, født 03 jun 1836 i Kongelunden, Store Magleby Sogn, død 06 apr 1924 på Skt. Josephs Hospital, København N."  Similarly with Ingeborg.  The comments do not show when you view the household.

There are some records of Ørum & Wulff at the Rigsarkiv, https://www.sa.dk/daisy/arkivskabers_arkivserier?a=&b=&c=%C3%B8rum+wulff&d=1&e=2016&f=&g=&h=&ngid=1902062&ngnid=1902064&heid=&henid=&epid=&faid=&meid=&m2rid=&side=&sort=&dir=&gsc=&int=&ep=&es=&ed=.  Perhaps you can find a volunteer on the Opslag i bøger og på arkiver forum to look for your Rasmus Petersen for you?
