Can any one help with suggesting a date for this photograph.

I have checked list of Danish photographers that have, but do not seem to find this one listed. The studio  is in Odense. Any help with a date would be much appreciated.

I don`t know the  photographer in Odense but to me it´s like Edvard Biering, Odense

The young man´s hat say Frelserens Hær = Salvation Army

I think photo is taken around 1910.

Hej Bente,

Thanks for the help. The date of circa 1910, makes things even more of a mystery - my Great-Grandparents emigrated to UK in 1901 and there were not any male relatives of that age remaining in Denmark (they were either very much older or children).

Both of my Great-grandparents were members of the Frelserens Hær in Denmark (but did not continue in England). However they had no connection with Odense. My Great-grandfather came from Nakskov, while my Great-grandmother from Slagelse.

There were two photographers Biering in Odense around 1900:

- Jens Julius Fangel Biering, studio in Dronningensgade 5 from 1889
- Edvard Biering, working in the same studio from 1900

So the photo could be from around 1900. I find it hard to decipher the initial, though.

The Frelsens Hær uniform makes it hard to make conclusions from the clothing, but to me
it seems to be a portrait of a very young man.

Ingar / Gitte,

Thank you both for your help.

Looking at the initial on the photograph, it looks more like a J then an E so my photographer is most likely to be Julius Biering. Then looking at the photographer's strap line, the photo in 1910 is completely different, than the earlier two photos (on the links provided by Gitte). This would tend to suggest a time period between 1889 - 1905.

Then looking at the quality of the image its self my photo, does not seem to be as clear as the example on the link (of Anna Marie Ludvigsen) which was dated as 1900. It is perhaps more similar to the picture quality of the earlier photo (of Peder Lollesgaard) which is dated from 1889. So it seems to suggest a date perhaps of the mid 1890's.

My Great-grandparents married in 1894, and I have a photograph of them both (in that year) dressed in the uniform of the Frelsens Hær.
