I'm trying to find the where my ancestors Jens Hansen and Karen Hansdatter lived before 1783. Karen died 8 May 1792, while Jens died sometime between 1787 and 1801. There doesn't seem to be any record of his death in the Lillerød church books.

To complicate things there was a Jens Hansen Fynboe married to a Karen Olsdatter living in Lillerød at the same time.

He is listed in the 1787 census with Karen and all (but one) of his (known) children.

Jens Hansen - Male - 44 - 1743 - Married - husbond bonde og gårdmand
Karen Hansdatter - Female - 44 - 1743 - Married - madmor
Peder - Male - 22 - 1765 - Single - deres ægte børn
Johanne - Female - 17 - 1770 - Single - deres ægte børn
Hans - Male - 15 - 1772 - Single - deres ægte børn
Lars - Male - 8 - 1779 - Single - deres ægte børn
Jens - Male - 4 - 1783 - Single - deres ægte børn
Inger - Female - 1 - 1786 - Single - deres ægte børn

Unfortunately, there is no mention of my ancestor Maren (born 1767) in the Lillerød records in 1787 however she appears in the Lillerød 1801 census fostering her 15 year old sister, Inger.

The first mention of Jens in the Lillerød records is in 1783 during the birth of his son Jens in 1783.

Can someone please translate this for me? Is there any indication of where Jens Hansen was originally from?

Karen Hansdatter's record indicates she's a widow at the time of her death in 1792. If you look on the same page under 1790 you'll find Jens Hansen dead at the age of 53.

Here is the link to their combined skifte 15 Dec 1792 https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17072108#141968,34715159 Perhaps one of the Danes can take a look at it to see if it provides any useful information for you.

You'll find the 1764 betrothal of Jens Hansen and Karen Hansdatter in Farum, Ølstykke, Frederiksborg Enesteministerialbog 1724-1789, bottom left page of ops 175.
Dom: 1st Monday Advent (3 Dec 1764) with bachelor Jens Hansen from Bregnerød and maiden Karen Hansdatter from Staunsholdt betrothed https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17114653#149332,24696468

The marriage is on the bottom right page of the same ops. in 1765.
Dom: 2nd after Epiphany (20 Jan 1765) with Jens Hansen from Bregnerød and Karen Hansdatter from Staunsholdt married

Maren Jensen is found baptised in the same churchbook in 1767 (I think 2 July), ops 88 middle of the next to the last paragraph on the left page https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17114653#149332,24696381

Lars Jensen is found baptised in the same churchbook 29 March 1778, ops 227, 2nd paragraph from the top of the left page https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17114653#149332,24696520

I only looked for the first and last child you couldn't find in Lillerød. Chances are you'll find the baptisms of Peder, Johanne and Hans in Farum also.

Bregnerød and Staunsholdt (Stavnsholt) are both located in Farum parish so that may be a good starting point for further research on Jens Hansen and Karen Hansdatter.

Hi Pamela,

Thank you. You are a champion.

I had seen the entry for Jens Hansen's death on the same page as Karen Hansdatter's death but I always thought it was the death of Jens Hansen Fynboe as the 1787 Lillerød census indicated Jens Hansen was born in 1743, whereas his death notice indicates he was born circa 1737.

However I have since done further research and discovered Jens Hansen Fynboe died in 1785 and his wife Karen Olsdatter remarried in latter in 1785.

Thank you again for passing on the information about where Jens and Karen originated from but I have to ask, how did you find out they were from Farum?

Regards,

Dan

The 1845 census is the first census that lists a place of birth. Had a hunch Lars Jensen, the youngest child not found in the Lillerød church books, would still be alive at the time of that census so I did a search for him and found him still living in Lillerød http://www.ddd.dda.dk/asp/alle_opl_en.asp

Ah ... I should have thought of that myself. Thanks again. With your help I managed to discover Jens Hansen was the son of Hans Jensen and Someone Olsdatter and they had at least six children.

I can't work out the first name of Hans Jensen's wife and I was wondering if any of the Danes out there cpould read and translate their wedding notice.

Thanks to all in advance.
