Hi there,

I need assistance in finding records for my Danish ancestry. My great great grandparents came to America in 1882 and I am having the hardest time finding records past what is here in the states. I’ve tried navigating your website, but its not producing anything for me right now. Its probably the language barrier for me. Are the Danish records limited in the way they can be searched?

My great great Grandfather was Karl Knudsen Smidt (Schmidt, Smith) born in 1849, Svenstrup, Aabenraa-Sonderborg, Denmark, he married Cecelia Maria Hansen Schmidt (Smidt, Smith) in 1870 in Tonder. She was born 9 Dec 1851 in the same area as Karl. I am looking hard for both of their parents and am coming up very short. I would love to be directed to someone who can assist me with this project. All help is VERY much appreciated.

Note of import:  My Grandfathers grave marker in Iowa contains the spelling of his last name, by his desire, as Smidt.  My Grandmother shared with me that it is Danish origin and that at some point the German version was adopted, Schmidt, and then when they arrived in America they adopted the American English version of Smith.  So, in Denmark, my 2nd Great Grandfather was Karl Knudsen Smidt but here in America he went by Carl K Smith.  My 2nd Great Grandmother, his wife,  has so many spellings of her first name, plus the commonality of this name is creating great difficulty in this research.  Just on her alone, I've seen Cacilie, Cecillia, Cecilia and Cecelia.  I found it interesting that a record found though shows Cacilie, when her first child Peter was baptized.  My only record of a potential parent match for her is the one below.... except other records show that this child with the same name as my grandmother died in her first year, so I'm trying to confirm if these are the right parent names or if this is an error.   And I have nothing on my 2nd great grandfather's parents yet.

Oh my gosh, you rock!!  So so grateful!!  I will comb through what you sent me and get some info up on ancestry now that I'm headed in the right direction.  VERY grateful <3  I've started digging into Danish/Viking/Norwegian history and ancestry and it is extremely fascinating.  History is deeply complex.  And there are treasures of information around every bend.

What is the FT-1860 or FT-1845  Is that the year of the record?

FT = Folketælling 'census', e.g. FT-1860 = 1860 census.

I kind of thought that might be the case, that I was looking at census records.  This is making me want to learn the language.  I would love recommendations for Danish history books as well.  And If you are privy to good Norwegian history books as well, I am all ears. :)

Hi Erin
A bit more on Carl Knudsen Schmidt's father, Lars Madsen Schmidt.

According to the churchbook he married again in 1855:
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=200907#200907,38046380

It is therefore very likely Carl's mother has died.
Carl Knudsen Schmidt’s mother – Johanne Marie Hermansdatter – died on Oct. 23rd 1853;

Ya'll are going to make me cry being so gracious to look into these things for me.  I am so humbled and my gratitude is soaring.  Thank you Ellen and Inger.  My Grandmother here in the States is so fiercely independent and so am I that it is hard for either of us to ask for help, so to receive it can be overwhelming, even with "seemingly" little things.  Both of you have blessed me more than my words can put on this screen.

Erin Mardis

I wonder why Lars Madsen Schmidt's fathers name was Knudsen and not Schmidt...  Was that a skilled labor thing?

Inger Toudal

I 'll just add the heading to the 1803 census for Jels:

Haderslev, Gram, Jels, Grönbeck, Ausgerükte, , 68, FT-1803, C0090
Name:     Age:     Marital status:     Position in household:     Occupation:
Fridrich Knudsen Schmidt     50     Gift      Hausvater      hat ein geringe Kathe mit Dito Lande, ehmied??*  ein wenig
Maren Madstochter     38     Gift      Dessen Frau
Hans Nikolai     11     -      Deren Kinder
Mads     5     -      Deren Kinder
Lauritz     3     -      Deren Kinder

* maybe German Schmied 'smith'

- in the census, Lars Madsen Schmidt's father is recorded with the family name Schmidt, but it's probably not his official surname.

FS has a Danish word list as well as a German one: https://familysearch.org/wiki/en/Danish_Word_List

https://familysearch.org/wiki/en/German_Word_List

Here's a short history of the area which Tønder and Haderslev counties were part of: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duchy_of_Schleswig

According to the censuses, Cecilie Marie's mother Maren Ulrichsen was born in Lunde parish, Vester Horne district, Ribe county.

It definitely makes sense that Lars's Dad would be a blacksmith as well.  THANKS!

So maybe his full name is Karl Fridrich Knudsen Schmidt?  I see a LOT of four names for one person over there.  The tradition here is three.

Cicilie Marie Hansen’s parents was married in Møgeltønder Parish, Tønder County:
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=202083#202083,38309975

No. 9. Widower Peter Hansen, smallholder and tailor in Møgeltønder, 54 year. 2. Marriage
Maid Maren Ulriks, serving in Møgeltønder, 35 years. From Lunde sogn.

Peter Hansen dies on Nov 2nd 1861:
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=202087#202087,38310734

However, his death record does not say anything about his parents, but states – as the census – his was born in Burkal Parish and the age as 73 years – which mean the birth year must be approx. 1788.

The Churchbook for Burkal Parish with birth records before 1800 is not available.
But the churchbook for Burkal Parish, Tønder County has list a confirmation and an entry which could be Peter Hansen:
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=166309#166309,27932830
Apr 20th 1800.
Peter Hansen Lundtang
Parents: Hans Willumsen and Anne Sophie Pedersdatter Lundtang

Unfortunately, I can not find Peter Hansen 1st marriage to see it that would confirm his Parents.

Let’s look at Maren Ulrich, born in Lunde Parish, Ribe County, approx. 1807.
Maren’s confirmation is in Lunde Parish:
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=166310#166310,27932941

And list her parents as (1822, no.5):
Ulrich Iversen and Zidsel M. Christensdatter, Søndertarp.
Birth date Nov 15th 1807

This is her parents in Census 1834:

I think Ellen was looking for Peter Hansen in Lunde parish  ;)

At the time of the confirmation 1806, Peter Hansen in Burkal parish was living in Rentz (nowadays spelled Rens).

For place names, please refer to http://www.krabsen.dk/stednavnebase/

The father of Peter Hansen, born 4 Aug. 1788, is Peter Hansen or Bertelsen, the mother Ann Maria Hansdatter in Rentz:
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17216188#201171,38101143 - right page, bottom

https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17216192#201176,38102640 - right page, No 30

Peter Hansen in Rentz died 9 Aug. 1802, 64½ years old:
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17216188#201174,38101837 - right page, No 21

https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17216192#201176,38102872 - right page, No 21
- his parents were Hans Bertelsen and Anna Martensen
- he left behind his widow and 5 children:
1) Anna, married to Ebbe Jensen in Rentz, who had a daughter Mette Maria
2) Hans Peter
3) Hans
4) Peter
5) Andreas

Tønder, Slogs, Burkal, Dorfs Renz, , 42, FT-1803, C2037
Name:     Age:     Marital status:     Position in household:     Occupation:
Ebbe Jensen     27     Gift      Mann      Inste mit Land u. Schneider
Anna Peters [Peter's (daughter)]    31     Gift      dessen Frau
Metta Mar. Jensen     3           ihre Kinder
Peter Jensen     1           ihre Kinder
Maria Peters [Peter's (wife/widow)]     56     Enke      Mutter der Frau [the wife's mother]
Peter Petersen [Peter's son]     15           ihr Sohn [her son]

At that time in Schleswig, you very often see two surnames in use: the family name, and the patronymic. In
addition, the wife's or widow's 'surname' could be her husband's first name, as you see in the above census.

There's a mistake in the index for the Burkal church book. Peter Hansen who died 24 Feb. 1791 was the son of
Hans Petersen and Christina Jürgens in Rentz, so he cannot be the Peter Hansen who was born 4 Aug. 1788:

Good morning/evening from the States.  I sign into another treasure trove.  Deeply Blessed....  again...

Do either of you live close to these areas in these records.?  There are some videos on youtube that I watched yesterday that showcase Denmark and I watched one for Norway.  I had no idea Denmark was flat in comparison to Norway.  I thought they both were pretty mountainous and the differences in architecture between the two is striking.  And when you look at Denmark on google earth, the FARMS!!!  Oh my gosh they are EVERYWHERE.  I thought the bulk of Europe was very congested, but it looks like I have a LOT to learn.  Fascinating ...

How can I find the death date for Lars Madsen Schmidt and Maren Ulriks?  I love it that one of my Grandmothers name is pronounced almost like mine.  Maren is pronounced like Erin except with an M.

Thank you Inger :)  How do I look those records up for myself here?  I like to research these lines until I hit the end.  That's not something I can ask y'all to do for me.  As great as y'all are I'm not going to burden you guys with that big of a project.

And let me just share this, when I research here in America, I can many times take a name and dates and google them and other peoples stories will pop up about my ancestors and I can fill in the lines pretty quick.  I have some lines here all the way back to dates between 1600 and 1054 in England/Scotland/Ireland and Native American. When I do that with Danish names and dates, I get nothing...  or barely anything.  Is there a Danish search engine that might produce that kind of information that I just am not aware of? OR is it the difference in surname use that might be causing this challenge for me and the more educated I am in those differences, the info I'm seeking will "appear" to me where I didn't see it before...  does that make sense?  There are times where I literally get nothing, no results on on the page, but there are other times when I have results and its just my lack of knowledge that makes it where I can't "see" what I'm looking for even though it may be right there in front of me.  I hope I'm making sense.

I use https://familysearch.org/search and https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1&countryId=1927025

Indexed censuses at http://ddd.dda.dk/dddform_uk.asp

- see http://www.dis-danmark.dk/kipkort/fronta-e.php (no censuses available for Schleswig after 1860 until 1921)

Danish church records (some with indexes - Register): https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/geo/geo-collection/5

Danish census records: https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/rif/rif-collection/7

Guides in English: https://www.sa.dk/en/ and https://familysearch.org/wiki/en/Denmark_Genealogy

In Sønderjylland/Schleswig from 1874, you find births, marriages, and deaths in the civil registers, too,
(many of these registers have indexes - Navneregister): https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/geo/geo-collection/3

And of course you may be lucky that somebody else is researching the same ancestors, and has placed the results on the Internet.

Best regards,
Inger
