In response to a question I presented to this Forum I was referred to a Probate record for Niels Lauridsen who died on 10 April 1802 in Balle, Hids, Viborg. https://www.danishfamilysearch.com/sogn1948/churchbook/source130981/opslag14010307

The Probate reference given was: http://balle-lokalhistorie.dk/skifteprotokol.html
Specifically, Vester Kejlstrup gods, Skifteprotokol, 1791-1815, G 238-2 where an abbreviated presentation was provided as follows:

105 Niels Lauridsen i Hvinningdal. 11.12.1802, side 79. E: Edel Sørensdatter. LV: Søren Lauridsen sst. B: Søren 22, Anne 19. FM: farbror Anders Lauridsen sst.

How does one know if, and when a Probate was established?

How does one go about looking for one?

Niels Lauridsen died in Hvinningdal, Balle and his Probate was entered in Vester Kejlstrup. Are Probate documents filed at specific locations? Is there a list of jurisdictions and the areas they cover?

The entire Probate document is located at: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QSQ-G93H-HSVX-4?i=257&cc=2015318 , starting at the bottom of page 79, it continues for several pages.

Also, is there a way to get a transcription of a Probate or at least the pertinent parts?

Any insight into understanding the Probate process would help greatly.

Thank you

Karsten---

Thank you for your feedback. I am new to the use of Probate Records and would like to get as much information on when, how and where one can use them and gain the most benefit.

I have been to that website multiple times and have read over it several times. However, it does not explain the USAGE of Probate records and how one finds useful information therein.

For example, in my initial thread, questions that came to my mind were:

1- why did Niels Lauridsen have a Probate record?
2- Hence, what determines when and if a person has a Probate?
3- Where does one look to find the Probate?
4- Are there Indexes?
5- Why was his Probate located in the Vester Kejlstrup gods and not in documents directly associated with Hvinningdal, Balle?
6- Hence, are there territorial jurisdictions? Such as does, Vester Kejlstrup cover that whole region?
7- If there are jurisdictional entities, is there a list of them and/or index that relates to the areas they cover?
8- Then once one has located the jurisdictional entity, how does one locate a Probate record within that entity's register? Is there an index for the Probate document that one can check with without looking at each entry?

Unfortunately, the website you referred me to, a WIKI page, only provides "boiler plate" type information.

I am hoping for more detailed guidance.

Again, Thank you for your feedback.

Niels Lauridsen was a leaseholder (fæster) under the estate Vester Kejlstrup, who was the owner of his farm/house.
So when he died there should be a probate after him within 30 days.

If you at https://www.sa.dk/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Gods_Stedregister.pdf
Place register to 'Nørrejyske'* Estate records/archives
*whole Jylland except Sønderjylland (Southern Jylland)
search with Ctrl-F on Hvinningdal, you will see 3 possibilities:
Allinggård - Vester Kejlstrup - Skanderborg Rytterdistrikt

So you will have to search in the protocols of these estates.
Personally I prefer to use the database of Rigsarkivet at https://www.sa.dk/
Scroll down on VÆLG ARKIVALIETYPE (chose type of record) to FIND DIN SLÆGT (find your family) and click SØG (search).
To the left you will see a lot of possibilities; scroll down to SKIFTER HELE LANDET (probates whole country*) and click it.
*there is a special for København
Chose amt VIBORG and Arkiv VESTER KEJLSTRUP GODS.
And you will see that there is a register for the protocol 1755-1815.
chose 1791-1815 and there is an alphabetic register on first names.
On image 5 is to the right (not easy to read):
Skiftet efter ........ afg. Niels
Laursen i Hvinningdahl. See pagina 79-80-81 og 82

-------
Go back to the actual Skifteprotokol, and you will find the start at page 79 at image 42
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=194002#194002,32510014
---------
Alphabetic registers are usually placed in the back of each protocol, and the above mentioned has been taken from there.
-----------
And if you cannot read the probate, you can ask for help in the forum, and you will probably get help !

I hope this is of some value for you.

Ole---

Thank you for the feedback.

I have only had an opportunity to glance at what you provided. Tomorrow I will spend some time seeing if I can find Niels Lauridsen's Probate by following your suggested steps, as a test case since I know a Probate exists. Then I'll try it with others to see what I come up with.

Again thank you for the input. It is a real help in getting started.
