Lorence Johnson claims he was born 15 April 1835, Kiel, Denmark.  At the time this territory belonged to Danmark but under Schleswig-Holstein.  Now, of course, this is Germany.  He emigrated to Australia.  I cannot find a Census for 1840 in Kiel so I do not know how to find him in Denmark or Australia.  Is someone able to help?

His parents were:

Apparently: Mother is Catherine Peter (which I think is Flemish for Peters) and father Van Cauwelaert (which I also think is Flemish).

On the statutory declaration for his Australian naturalisation certificate he says he was born 15 April 1835, Kiel, Denmark.   Where do I go?  I have his emigration document but not sure how to upload it.

Hi  :)

First you use answer this topic. You can upload the document by finding the text  "Øvrige funktioner..." You find it below the white writing sheet. When you press it you´ll get some options. The one you need is Vedhæft. "Gennemse"= look in your computer for the document you want to upload.

Kind regards  :)

Karin

Hi Rebecca

A question for Lorence Johnson was posted earlier in the forum:

https://www.slaegtogdata.dk/forum/index.php/topic,122470.0.html

He wasn't found at that time.
I found the emigration papers in ancestry, and in these, his name and birthday is listed as you write it.

Furthermore, on his wedding certificate, the name of his parents is stated, and one more information: His father is listed as 'mariner' (not sailor, but mariner as if he was in the Navy).

I did look for him in the church records for 'Holmens' in Copenhagen at the time of his confirmation (approx. 1850), but I didn't find him. 'Holmens' is the church normally used by persons employed by the Navy.
However, I did find other Danish children born to fathers in the Navy - and born outside of Denmark.
So, this is still a possibility.

I also looked in parishes in the southern part of Denmark (the names of his parents could indicated he originated from the area). I did find a Lorenz Johnsen born in Sønderborg. But  the birthday was a year early, and his mothers name was not right (but he had a sister with this name).

I'm sure the puzzle can be solved - but it is not easy.

Thank you both for the help.

It did not occur to me that the topic had already been discussed.  I should have done a search first.

The indexing of the 1840 census for the Duchy of Holstein has only started: https://www.dis-danmark.dk/kipkort/kort/hols1840.gif

The same is the case for the southern part of the Duchy of Schleswig: https://www.dis-danmark.dk/kipkort/kort/sles1840.gif

Searching for him in the original censuses at the Danish National Archives in Copenhagen would be like looking for a needle in a haystack:

Hello everyone, particularly Ellen and Rebecca

I am the poster of the previous message.

Can you please tell me WHAT emigration records you have, as I have nothing. Do you mean the naturalisation records?

His birthdate ranges according to which records you go by:

on the certificate for his FIRST marriage, 1865, he was 26, so born in 1839
on the certificate for his SECOND marriage, 1873, he was 32, so born 1841
on his naturalisation records, b 1835.

So born sometime between 1835 and 1841 but probably closer to 1835 is more accurate.
