I found a note in the Jevnførelsesregister of Øster Egede sogn, Præstø amt, that August Jørgensen died in America.

He went to Wisconsin in 1842, but I don't know if he died there or on the way.  I think he died before 1849 when the handwriting changed to a new pastor.  Somehow news of the death was sent back to Denmark.  I don't know how the pastor knew.

Are there other records (either online or not) in Denmark that would tell me the date and place of death?

Thanks,

Hi Lis,

Yes I have the afgangslist and passenger list and earlier information.  He left a father and brother in Denmark but no wife that I know of.  I looked for a probate for him, the father and brother in Denmark but did not find one.  I tried searching in the Danish newspapers online for news of his death.  He could have died on the ship, between New York and Wisconsin, in Wisconsin, or some other place.  This is a difficult problem!

It is interesting that his death is mentioned in the Jevnførelsesregister.  So maybe there is another unusual source with more information.

Hi Lisa

When his father or mother died there are surely a probate after them, and at that time they have tried to find him, so
Find the parents dead, and look up in the "dødsanmeldelser" -deadregister in the sogn, amt where they died and find them there

You could also try to find them under  "skifter"  in the sogn where they died.

Hi Lisa

Probably You must look here: https://www.sa.dk/daisy/arkivskaber_og_arkivserie_liste?a=Fakse&b=Skifte&d=1&e=2017
But it seems like these are not available at arkivalieronline - try to se if they are on Familysearch.

I was told that a New "Godsforvalter" came to Jomfruens Egede 1850.
There is not a probate after the mother in Jomfruens Egedes Protocols

Hi Grethe

Yes, I thought after the father died, they should look for the son even if he is still in America, and any news about him would be in the probate.  The father died in Feb 1848 but I cannot find his probate (online) in Jomfruens Egede, Lystrup Gods, Fakse Herreds Provsti, or Stevns Herreds Provsti.

Lis,

Thank you for the link to Stevns-Fakse skifte.  Very interesting that they have original papers at the RA that are not on AO or FS.  Maybe they are fragile?  It is good to know there is another possibility besides the places I have looked online.   :)

The mother died in 1817 and the father requested an uskiftet bo.  I learned about that from the Præstø Amt Journal of 1817.

Is it possible for me (in the U.S.) to request copies of records from the RA (when they are not online, of course)??  I don't know if they have employees to do such work, or if a private researcher must be hired.

Thank you,

At the death registration it states: "Anmeldt 8/2 48 Store Hedinge", so my guess would by this probate series (not online)

Thanks for the help, everyone.  I will try to order the probates (and some other records I want) from the RA.  It is nice that they offer to search and copy for people who are far away.   :)
