I  started researching my mother's adoption and found out her mother was named Eva Aaroe. I thought, wow, what a beautiful name, I must find out more, so now about 9 months later I now a lot about a woman named Aaroe. I have found out her Grandfather was Nis AAroe, born in Schleswig Holstein Denmark, March 14th 1855, after taken over by war moved Near Kolding where he worked on a Dairy farm and married Mary Christina AAgard, born Nov 18th,1859. I have information that they belonged to the Lutheran Church of Denmark, and were married May 12 1887. They arrived in the United States in 1880.

Also I would like to now if the name Aaroe means anything or was the origin from the Island of Aaro.

No doubt the Aarø name is from the Årø island off Haderslev fjord.
Many in that area have that surname.

On the marriage record what number are they, I can not tell?

Thank you for finding this information.

My goals are to take the father history as far back as I can, find out his mother and where his sister ended up or if he had more brothers or sisters.

on the Birth record I see Nis Aaroe is number 18. Would Someone tellme what else it says?

Thank you very much, you have given me so much information. It is very kind of you to do so much work for me.  Would you check one more thing please?  What happened to Ann Marie Aaroe, his sister. I wounder if she was married and stayed in Denmark or if she moved to the US.

I wondered how he could leave his parents but they already passed away, so sad.

I don't know where to look for Anna Maria Aarøe born 12 Aug. 1853 in Hoptrup:

https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17216930#201726,38235970 - right page, No 38

Only her birth is registered in the index for Hoptrup church records 1700 - 1874:

https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=18484684#237231,45135279

- and her name is not in the index for Hostrup civil records 1874 - 1960:

https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=18484538#237114,45120214

She must have left Hostrup parish, but where did she go? The censuses taken in Sønderjylland (Northern Schleswig) while it was
under Prussian rule 1864 - 1920 were destroyed by the German authorities after they had been used for statistical purposes.
So no censuses in Sønderjylland where to search for her, and cannot find her in censuses north of the border.

She's alive when her father dies 11 Mar. 1873, but unfortunately her place of residence is not mentioned in his death record.

She is not among the witnesses at the baptism of her niece Karen Marie Aarøe in Ødis 1878:
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17217518#203034,38505305 - No 33

Nis Aarøe moved from Hoptrup to Taps parish in May 1872: https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17126992#170237,28577285 - No 16

He then moved on to Ødis parish in Sep. 1874: https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17128580#173640,29217343 - No 5

Nis and Anna Maria had a brother Jens born 25 Jan. 1857:
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17216930#201728,38236366 - left page, top

He died 3 Mar. 1857: https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17216930#201728,38236561 - left page, top

Typo: Hostrup in my former posting should of course be Hoptrup.

Cannot find Anna Maria Aarøe in the Danish emigration databases.

If she married, she could be in censuses and databases with her husband's surname.

Forgot to mention that there are no lists of arrivals and removals in the Hoptrup church records (where one could possibly find Anna Maria).

I first found Nis Aarøe in the Ødis arrival list (coming from Taps 1874), and then in the Taps arrival list, coming from Hoptrup in 1872.

Would you be able to find her exact birthday?

Wendy m Newton

I found the birthday.

Wendy m Newton

Maybe Ann Marie was near her step mother  Anne Christine Schmidt

Wendy m Newton

Also very unfortunate for Hans Peter Aaroe to pass away on his birthday

I searched the forum and found this. I copied it here.  Nis Aaroe ended up in Eureka Kansas, close in a smaller town.

An American relative seeks help finding information about his grandfather Hans Christian Jensen and her grandmother Anne Marie Aeroe.
She has given the following information: Hans Christian Jensen born in Holbæk 05-04-1853. He should have come to the United States in November 1881 and lived most of his life in Cleveland. His name changed to Johnson. He had a brother-Peder-had also been in Cleveland. Hans Christian Jensen died in a train accident 05-08-1905 and is buried in Cleveland.
Her grandmother is Anne Marie Aeroe should be born 21-11-1853. The name has several variations: On her tombstone Annie Marie and Anna, Aaro Aroe on the children's baptism papers.
They got married in Cleveland 15-10-1882. Anne Marie had a sister who delivered in Eureka.
Her grandfather - Carl Frederick Johnson, born 08-04-1891 and her aunt Carrie Christine Johnson, born 05-08-1887, should have had contact with family members in Denmark according to her information. Her mother has stated that a "cousin" might have lived in Funen.
Can anyone help me further?
Thanks in advance.
Regards Leisa
