Thanks again for your help!

People often recieved a surname refering to a farm or village, they or their family came from.
It was not a name, they got at the baptism.

The Danish bjerg means mountain, but we have no mountains in Denmark, so in reality it means hill.
At https://historiskatlas.dk/ you can see maps from different periods.
At the maps from 1901-1945 and 1977-1985 you can see the borders of the parish.
And the old vicarage (Gl. Præstegaard) is just south of Bukbjerg, which is a bit east of the church.
So Johanne Simonsdatter was not far from home.
Bukbjerg seems to be 2 farms a little east of Ulfborg church.

Niels Pedersen probably got bjerg from Bøvlingbjerg.
And that is in Bøvling parish a good deal north of Ulfborg.
The cadastral map from there made 1818 https://hkpn.gst.dk/mapviewer.aspx?type=o1k_oekort&id=8222&elav=1260152
shows, that the farm Bøvlingbjerg is in an area called 'Bjerget'.

Ole,

Thanks so much for the additional information on names.  I guess it was a way to distinguish between two named-alike people.

Can you help with a couple more translation/transcriptions?

I looked for the marriage of Johanne Simonsdatter's parents (Simon Simonson & Zidsel Jensdatter) in Ulfborg, but didn't find it.  Suggestions?

Thanks again!

Ole,

Thanks again for all the help!

Let me see if I have this right:  Simon Simonsen Buchberg and Zidsel Jensdatter were married 17 Sep 1790.  Their daughters Johanne and Anne Kirstine Simonsdatter were Baptised 25 May 1801.

Zidsel Jensdatter was Simon Simonsen's 2nd wife?

1st married Kirsten Graversdatter (buried 20 Feb 1790)
   3rd married Zidsel Jensdatter 17 Sep 1790

I can't find Zidsel Jensdatter in the 1787 Census.  I also can't find Zidsel Jensdatter or Simon Simonsen's births.  Suggestions?

Zidsel Jensdatter was the 2nd wife of Simon Simonsen.

I have been looking around and found:

Zidsel/Sidsel Jensdatter is here as a maid (tjenestepige) in 1787
Ringkøbing, Ulfborg, Ulfborg, Schougaard, , 9.Familie, FT-1787, C1688

Sidsel Jensdatter                     22     Ugift     Tjenestepige
 and several others

And this transcript from Ulfborg
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=200783#200783,38020995 and next pages
reveals, that Zidsel Jensdatter was not born there. She also had a sister Else Jensdatter, who carried her illegitimate son in 1789.

Ole,

Thanks so much!  I have a question that I hope you can answer.  What does the Bjerg & Bukbjerg following their names mean?

Niels Pedersen Bjerg
Johanne Simmonsdatter Bukbjerg

Thanks again for your help!

Actually "Bjerg" in Denmark originally meant hill and it is only in modern times it has come to mean "mountain" outing more and more the old word "Fjeld", which we for some weird reason only really use for mountains in Norway (and somewhat Sweden).
Denmark has no mountains, but a lot of place names with (-)bjerg.

The combination Buk+bjerg means Ram-hill [male goat].
There are 18 place names in Denmark with that combination. Most of them (14) are concentrated in south-east Jutland, especially around and near Aabenraa (8 instances).
Ulfborg contains one of the 4 Bukbjerg, not in south-east Jutland, but is in West-Jutland instead.

To your last question:
Sidsel  should have been born ca. 1764 acc. to the censuses, and that is from ops.24 in the quoted link at
https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=200783#200783,38021015 and next.
She is not there.

I would like to look at your other links, but just now I am rather busy with some other matters.
So you have to be patient until next week.

I'm not familiar with ops. 21 & 24.  Can you tell me what type of record it is?  Is it birth records or something else?

I've also found another child of Simon Simonsen & Diesel Jensdatter - CHRISTEN born in 1806.  Can you transcribe and translate for me?

Can you also tell me what "døde inden fremstilling" means?  When I use a translator it says "died before manufacture".  Thanks!

Ole Westermann

Sharon

The Danish opslag means reference and refers to the numbers (1-121) in the left column.
If you click ex. No.(reference) 26 you see that it is page 12 in the book (bapt. 1769-1773).

And "døde inden fremstilling" means "died before publication (in the church)".
Many children were baptized at home shortly after their birth.
