Due to a revelation thanks to Ole Selmer on this forum that my ancestor's actual name was Treu (I had read it as a descriptor as faithful) and thanks to the http://www.odensedatabasen.dk/ I have found so much more about my 6th great grandfather and he is less of a mystery man.

The Odense Glovemaker Guild Register (Lavsprotokol) for the Odense glove-makers guild has an August Davidsen Try who was assigned as an apprentice glove-maker in 1743. This is the rosetta stone, he worked as a glovemaker later in life, some entries say he is August Davidsen and others Treues or even Treuesen or occasionally neglecting to mention his name at all.  His occupation is sometimes referred to as Pelsmager rather than Handschumacher though perhaps this is a matter of semantics.  His sons confirmations list him as August Davidsen or August David.

He was an apprentice glove maker PRIOR to joining the military, so perhaps he isn't a foreign mercenary after all?

The list entry:

I can read his name but the last bit is hard to read, could be Try or Tru?  This is the most information I have ever found about him, does the apprenticeship contract say anything more about him?  Where he is from or how old he is, anything like that?  I have a lot of trouble reading Danish cursive, I could use your help!

Previous, largely futile attempts to find August:

Finding him taking an apprenticeship in 1743 makes me think he is much younger than Else Magrethe, his wife.  Don't people take apprenticeships in their early teens?  Clearly the apprenticeship didn't work out as the next I hear from him it's 3 years later and he's already in the army as a cavalryman.

I don't think he died in South Stenderup but I have no idea where he went or what happened to him after Else Magrethe died in 20 Dec 1771.  Maybe I should try his older sons.

I read Inger´s transcription as he finished the apprenticeship.

Try is a village in the northern part of Jutland in Dronninglund Parish, the churcbook starts in 1717! Actually there is also a village in Torslev Parish called Try. Both Dronninglund and Torslev are in Hjørring Amt.

Thanks Ole!

Sounds like a lead worth pursuing, I have no idea of the birth year of August though I think he was probably born after 1715, especially if he was much younger than his wife Else.  I had no luck last time I tried this though, one of my ancestors who had relatives in the Horne region of Jutland his surname was Ansager, but he wasn't born or ever lived in Ansager, but his mother was from Lyne in Nørhede, and his children all adopted the surname Dall or Dahl which is where my surname comes from.  Still, this is the most solid lead I've ever had on his origins and I'll pursue it!

Hmm so he had two apprenticeships, not just one?  Or rather, was apprenticed to two different glovemakers?

Wow I can't read that at all, I can just barely make out Hans Rasmussen. What does it say about Hans, Else Magrethe and August?
Hans Rasmussen was also a glove maker?
