At the 2nd battle of the 1st Schlesvig-Holstein War in 1848 my great-grandfather was wounded at Slesvig, taken prisoner of war and sent to a Prussian Army hospital in Prinsens Palæ at Slesvig.  His leg was amputated.  After being released as a POW he ended up in København where he later married my great-grandmother.

Were severely injured soldiers sent to København for hospitalization because there was a larger hospital there?

Kind regards,
Rog

Are these lists burials?
Jens Christensens service number was 141.  There is a No. 141 on the page but it is 15 Apr. 1849.
Jens Christensen was in the 4th Infantry, 2nd Co. so it does not seem to be him but I cannot translate it.

Jens married Ane Kirstine Magdalene Jørgensen in København in August of 1849 so I would not think he would have been in Augstenborg in April unless Augstenborg was a temporary hospital for the wounded.

Thanks, Ole

That record doesn't help me.  He did not die.
I was questioning if it was possible that he had been sent to København to a larger hospital there where they could better treat his wounds.

I would assume that his leg was amputated in a temporary hospital or field hospital and he would have needed further treatment.

Just wondering if anyone knew about medical care during the 1st War.

Best wishes,

I guess that the army hospital in Slesvig had skilled surgeons for amputations.
After his release he maybe needed after-treatment in København.
Do you know when he was released and arrived in Kbh?

Maybe he asked for a memorial medal later. Might contain informations.

Ranged after place of birth.

Applications for the memorial medals are, as far as I know, indexed according to place of residence in 1876 (county and district).

Thank you for your help.  I found my answer.

The Prussian hospital at Slevig was a temporary army hospital, probably just a field hospital.  Amputations were preformed in field hospitals because that was the only treatment for wounds of the extremities at that time in history.  After the amputation the wounded were sent behind lines to larger hospitals for further treatment.  His leg was amputated on 23 April 1848, the day he was wounded in the leg and taken as a POW by the Prussian Army.  He was in København by 1849 & married in Aug 1849.  The Prussian Army probably didn't want to keep him since he was seriously injured

Thank you & kind regards,
Rog
