Hello,

This is what I know about Karen Jensdatter who married Soren Baerntsen Hyld 21 Dec 1816 in Eldrup, Tolstrup, Voer, Skanderborg.  It says he was 32 and she was 28 but as you will see on most of the Census documents there was a 7 year age-gap between Soren and Karen.

Their marriage (bottom left): https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/en/billedviser?bsid=170591#170591,28642847

I find them in the 1834, 1840, 1845, 1850 and 1860 Census documents as follows:

On two of the Census documents Karen says she was born in Kattrup and in one she say Tolstrup.  I realise they are close together but I took her to mean she was born in Kattrup.  Her marriage age and all but the 1860 Census document indicate a birth year of around 1789.  I could only find one Karen Jensdatter born in Kattrup, 30 May 1789, between 1786-1792 here (top right) :https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/en/billedviser?bsid=165455#165455,27792666

The problem I am having with this birth record is that the father is Jens Caspersen.  None of Karen's children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren have the name Casper as I would expect given the naming conventions at the time.  She does have 2 sons: Johan Baernt Sorensen Hyld and Hans Jorgen Sorensen Hyld.

In Tolstrup there is only one Karen born to a Jens that is close to a 1789 birth year and I do not think this can be her because of the gap.
1785
fol 49
Jens Nielsens barn af Lykkeberg - Karen

I find Jens Caspersen in the 1797 and 1801 Census documents married to a Margrethe (it says Sorensdatter in 1787 but I think this is a mistake because they are on their first marriage in both Census and their 1st son was named Christen, 2nd son Casper) Christensdatter.  None of Karen's daughters or granddaughters are named Margrethe.

I could not find a death record for Karen Jensdatter.  The closest I could find, assuming she remarried after the death of her 1st husband 29 Apr 1862 in Tolstrup, was this record in 1869 but it says she was 84 years old making her 4 years too old.

Possible death Karen Jensdatter #2 : https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/en/billedviser?bsid=170593#170593,28643432

Is it plausible to think that Jens Caspersen is really Karen's father and Margrethe Christensdatter is her mother?

Any help is appreciated.

Ole Westermann

I think that Karen Jensdatter is a daughter of Jens Caspersen and Margrethe Christensdatter in Kattrup, bapt. May 30, 1790.
At the 1787 census the oldest son is Christen (12), so the surname of Margrethe (Sørensdatter) must be
wrong in connection with Christensdatter in 1801.

1787 they are in their 1. marriage https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=696#696,53858
1801 they are in their 1. marriage https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=26297#26297,2900014

You write, that none on Karens children get the name Casper.
The naming conventions do NOT say so - they say that a son should be named Jens.
And Karen may have had her reasons not to name a son after her father.

I didn't find the death of (the correct) Karen Jensdatter in Tolstrup. Maybe she moved to one of her children after Sørens death.

No doubt that it is the same Jens Caspersen, who died in Eldrup in Tolstrup p. in 1806.
I didn't find the death of his wife Margrethe Christensdatter.

By following JC's son Christen in the levying rolls I found them moving from Kattrup to Tolstrup p. after 1801

Thank you Ole!  I just wanted to be sure that it is reasonable that Karen did not name a child Casper or Jens.  I understand that it would normally  be Jens.  It is only that the name Casper never carries forward to her future ancestors and I found that odd given that it is not as common a name as say Jens, Hans, Niels, Peder, etc.

That is a possibility.  It would be nice if these children (ie: Jens Peder and Ane Margrethe) showed up on a Census with the family to at least feel a little more confident.  I am very confident about Ane Margrethe but not so much Jens Peder.

I am going to have a look at the sponsors for the baptisms of Karen Jensdatter's children to see if there are matches with Jens Peder.

No doubt that it is the same Jens Caspersen, who died in Eldrup in Tolstrup p. in 1806.
I didn't find the death of his wife Margrethe Christensdatter.

By following JC's son Christen in the levying rolls I found them moving from Kattrup to Tolstrup p. after 1801

And I also found the birth of Karens illegitimate son Jens Peter in 1812. So here is the naming of her father.

Ole, thank you so much!  This makes it clear that Christen Sorensen was illegitimate but Jens Caspersen raised him or is at least attached to him in his military file.

I am trying working on the Jens Peter illegitimate birth.  I have a problem with it because none of the witnesses/sponsors for Jens Peter's baptism are listed in Karen's children with Jens Caspersen.  I would have expected at least one name to overlap.

I think that Karen Jensdatter is a daughter of Jens Caspersen and Margrethe Christensdatter in Kattrup, bapt. May 30, 1790.

mvh Ole

Hi Ole.  When I looked at the birth record for Karen Jensdatter I thought it referred to 1789?

The information in the levying roll 1789 for Kattrup parish regarding the birth place for Christen and Casper is wrong:

Thank you for all of the Levying Roll links Inger!

Is she Margrethe Jensdatter, Sørensdatter, or Christensdatter?

That is the question.  I wish there was a way to confirm what her actual patronymic was.  Based on the names of her sons it could be Sorensdatter or Christensdatter.

Thank you Inger!  I think you are amazing at how quickly you find information that would take me days.

If I knew what Magrethe's patronymic was I could decide if I think that stillborn son belonged to her.  I am just not sure.

Unfortunately, the name of the mother is not mentioned. Is she Margrethe Jensdatter, Sørensdatter, or Christensdatter?

The more I look at the records I think she must have been Magrethe Christensdatter.  Her first son, her illegitimate son, she names Christen (father Soren Tangaard).

Her first son that she has with Jens Caspersen is Casper and her second son with Jens is named Soren (which may be in memory of Soren Tangaard if he died by the time Soren Jensen was born).

On the 1801 Census she is Magrethe Christensdatter.

The sponsor at Karen Jensdatter's wedding 1816, Christen Sørensen, Huusmand af Eldrup, must be her half-brother.

You've also found him as a witness at baptisms of Karen's children.

Her brother Søren Jensen died 19 Jan. 1861: https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?epid=17127172#170593,28643408 - No 1

Thank you so much Inger!  I think Christen Sorensen in the illegitimate child mentioned throughout the thread and Karen Jensdatter's half brother.

Rebecca. I am new in this forum but have come across this thread. Søren Bernthsen Hyld is my direct ancestor in 6 generation through his daughter Ane Sophie Dorthea Sørensdatter. Are you directly related with him also - and if so how? /Henrik Andersen
