Hello,

I have a marriage record for Jacob Jacobsen Lading and Margrethe Jacobsdatter 4 Dec 1793 Ørting, Hads, Arhus, Denmark.  According to the information I have, Jacob Jacobsen should come from Steensby, Kalvehave, Bårse, Praesto but I have been unable to locate him in the 1787 Census at that location.  He was married previously to??

Jacob Jacobsen Lading dies age 76 on 10 Apr 1833 Ørting, Hads, Arhus, Denmark but his death record reveals nothing new.

Death record #2 1833: https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=173871#173871,29251938

The information from the 1801 Census gives his birth year around 1768 but his death age of 76 means a birth year of 1757.  I originally had a birth year of "about 1768" for him until I found his death record.

Does the marriage record reveal where he is from?  Any ideas on where to locate his birth location?

The birth record for his daughter, Maren Jacobsdatter, might help.  Maren was born 8 May 1800 in Ørting, Hads, Arhus, Denmark.

Jacob's epithet "Lading" is the name of a parish 43 km north of Ørting.
At the wedding ceremony in 1793 Jacob Jacobsen is a widower and coachman at the vicarage. No epithet.
How sure are you that Jacob are from Kalvehave? Kalvehave is very far from Ørting (270 km).
Untill 1800 unmarried men of the peasent class were bonded to the administative district were they were born (stavnsbånd).

Hi Helmer,

I was not sure about his birth location at all.  It came from someone else but all information until I saw that was that he must come from or around Ørting.

I did not realise that peasant class men were bonded to the district so thank you for the link about that.  I learned something new.

Thank you so much Ole.  I was going to check the levying rolls but thought I was looking for a needle in a haystack not knowing where exactly my Jacob Jacobsen came from.

So that 1793 levying roll gives him a birth year of around 1770 which is closer to the 1768 birth year that I originally had.  I am starting to wonder if the death record I have is for a different Jacob (Jacobsen is not written) Lading in Ørting because that makes a birth year of around 1757 which is too large a gap from around 1770.  Since the surname is not given, other than Lading, it could be a different Jacob.

ETA: I cannot make out where Rasmus and Jacob are living on the 1792 levying rolls?

The only thing that makes me think the death record in 1833 is for my Jacob is that his wife, Margrethe Jacobsdatter, is a widow on the 1834 to 1850 Census.

I found a birth for a Rasmus Jacobsen born 30 Aug 1761 in Lading which would give him about the right age of 30 in 1792 for the levying rolls but the father is Jacob Nielsen and I do not see a mention of "Staldman" in the birth record.

Unfortunately, I have been unable to locate a birth around 1768 for Jacob (he is 7 years younger than Rasmus) in Lading to a Jacob Nielsen.

I also found a birth for Mette Jacobsdatter in 1753 and the Jacob in this birth has a surname that begins with an "S" and does not look like a standard surname but I cannot decipher it.

This military levying roll seems to have a different version of the father's last name.  Sons Rasmus, Niels and Jacob are on the 1789 roll in Akjær.  Is Niels 26 or 36?

57, 58 and 59

In the 1789 roll the fathers name is still 'difficult' - Stoermand? - and I don't think it's his real surname.
Rasmus at 28 is working at the big manor Frijsenborg
Niels at 36 in Giedved? ... 12 years Ma.. ... goes out of the roll*

*he is the key to solve the problem:

Thanks for sorting that out Ole!  I also think the birth record for poor Jacob was just missed.

Why can I not find any family members in the 1787 Census?  Was Kjær treated different in the Census?

Also, there were 2 sons by the name of Niels born to Jacob Nielsen.  I have not found a death record for the 1st Niels Jacobsen so this might be a situation where there were 2 sons by the name of Niels living at the same time?  This is why I wondered the age of the Niels in the levying roll because it could have been Niels #1 age 36 or Niels #2 age 26.

I have seen that before with 2 siblings with the same name - senior & junior.
But as the youngest Niels is not mentioned in the 1789 roll, he has probably died.

The brothers seem to have left the area at the 1787 census. - Prob. somewhere in Århus - Skanderborg - Viborg amt.
