In 1869 a raid by native American Indians occurred on the frontier of central Kansas, in an area that would eventually become Lincoln county.  Eventually the small farming village of Denmark, Kansas, America, would also be founded here.

On May 30 of 1869 during the Indian raid a number of settlers were killed or captured by the Indians.  Among the killed were Eskild and Stine Lauritzen (Lauritsen), who had recently arrived from Denmark, Europe.  For 149 years the Lauritzen's have been mentioned in history, but little else is know of them.  Their teenage son was away from home that day and was not harmed that day.

Recent research seems to indicate the Eskild was possibly Eskild Marcussen Lauritzen and Stine may have been Anne Kirstine "Stine" Jens Christensdatter.

This was found on the https://www.familysearch.org/  site at https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-89Z6-2NNZ?i=303  .  The record in quiestion is entry # 1 by 1857.

Could someone translate this document for me?

Is there any other information to be found about this family?

Thank you for any assistance or guidance you may be able to offer.

The local community near where the Lauritzen's settled is planning an event to remember the victims and survivors of the Indian raid on May 31 and June 1, 2019.

Sincerely

This is the family in Census 1860. They now live in Egvad Sogn, Åbenrå county.

There are two sons one 14 and the other 3. I doubt Eskild is the father of the eldest: Jens Lauridsen Ravn b. in Bundum Sogn, Ribe county.

The 3-year old son is Markus Mortensen Lauridsen b. around 1857 in Tirslund sogn, Haderslev county.

What was the name of the teenage son who escaped the Indian attack because he was absent?

It seems to be the right family. The son was named Marcus.

Marcus Mortensen Lauritzen was b. on 14 Sep. 1857 in Tirslund sogn (parish),

Thank you to all who answered my question and assisted in translating and transcribing the records.  It is appreciated very much.

Eva asked, who was the teenaged son that escaped the Indian raid.  It was 13 year old Marcus Lauritzen.  After his parents deaths he was supposed to have been sent to Chicago, Illinois, to live with relatives (possibly the older 1/2 brother?). and still later he was supposed to have moved to Iowa.  I do find where a Marcus Lauritzen died in Iowa in 1885, but can not prove it is the same person.

Thank you again for helping to fill in this history that has been missing for 149 years.

Mike
