Hello,

I have a birth record for Grethe Kirstine Gylsen and it looks like her father is Hans Petersen ?? and mother is Edele Kirstine Gudme.  The father should be Hans Peter Gylsen who is originally from Norway and dies in Horne, Svendborg in 1837.

Birth Grethe Kirstine Gylsen #46 (what is the birth date? 19 Nov? 1815) here: https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=180283#180283,30576485

They are on the 1834 Census here:

Year:    FT-1834   Source reference:   236

Shire:    Svendborg   Place name:    Boyden Bye

Carl Fredrich Peter Gylsen  21     Ugift          deres søn, roerskarl
Grethe Kirstine Gylsen     19     Ugift          deres dat

I have all of the Census records for the mother and her two children going forward.

On the 1880 Census there is a new person (Martha Regine Gylsen) who I am not sure how she is related to the family but if she is a child of Hans Peter and Edele Kirstine then their first child might have been born around 1807:

What I am trying to figure out is what it says for the parents in the baptism of Grethe Kirstine and if the witnesses can be deciphered as well so that I might be able to track Hans Peter back to Norway.

I have been unable to locate a marriage record for the couple (she is from Avernakø, Svendborg) or a birth record for Carl Frederick Peter (maybe he is also not listed as Gylsen?) or Martha Regine.

Death Hans Peter Gylsen here 14 Mar 1837 Horne, Svendborg, Denmark born in Tønsberg, Vestfold, Norway in 1788. Age: 49: https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=179537#179537,30446698

Any help is much appreciated.

ETA: I found Edele Kirstine Gudme's birth record here: https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=178571#178571,30293972

I found what I think is the marriage record for Hans Peter Gylsen and Edele Kirstine Gudme but I am even more confused because he is once again referred to as Hans Petersen (Matros) instead of Hans Peter Gylsen.

Married 31 Jan 1812 in Nyborg, Svendborg here #12: https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=180282#180282,30576431

I also found the birth record for Karl Frederick Peter Gylsen top left 26 Jun 1813 here: https://www.sa.dk/ao-soegesider/da/billedviser?bsid=180279#180279,30576154

Again the father is listed as Hans Petersen Matros?

About the name matros- it means sailor, and as you can see from the churchbook the priest often writes the work of the fathers, and  Hans Petersen  is appearently his common name in Denmark. Why he doesn't use his birthname Gylsen is hard to tell, as he is named Hans Peter as Christian names. But one reason could be, that Gylsen is a little strange-and he should maybe spell it, so it is easier to be called Hans Petersen instead.

But as a saileor it is sure the reason, that he came to Denmark and found a girl here and setlled down, also Svendbor is an old harbour city  with a large fleth, both for fishing and trade both to Germany and Norway and the baltic sea.

Martha Regine Bentzen f. Gylsen  73  enke (widow) born in Nyborg - Lærerinde (teacher)

Confirmation Nyborg 1821 - this could be her

8. Martha Regine Hans D - mother: Ellen Hans D - illegitimate child bapt 25 Sept 1806

But I can't find this baptism.
A possible father could be Hans Peter Gylsen, who might have been in Nyborg allready then.

PS - now I found her

Thank you for explaining all of that Grethe.  It makes sense that he was a sailor.  He originally comes from Norway so probably did as you said and came to Denmark and found a girl there to settle down with.

Thank you for finding all of that Ole.  So Martha Regine Gylsen does not appear to be the child of Hans Peter Gylsen but I assume they must be related because Gylsen is such an unusual surname in Denmark.
