I found this census and am wondering when the census were really taken.

København, København (Staden), Gothersgade (ulige numre), No. 87, Forhus, 129, 250, FT-1880, D4092

Name: Age: Marital status: Pos. in household: Occupation: Place of birth:
Hans Jørgen Jensen 28 Gift Husfader Kelner Stege
Marie Sofie Jensen f. Møller 29 Gift hans Kone  Randers
Hjalmar Louis Jensen 4 Ugift deres Søn  Kjøbenhavn
Amalie Petrea Jensen 2 Ugift deres Datter  Kjøbenhavn
Hans Peter Jensen 1 Ugift deres Søn  Kjøbenhavn
Vilhelmine Marie Petersen 19 Ugift  Tjenestepige Slagelse

Could the Vilhelmine Marie Petersen in this 1880 census be the same one as this female below?

Navn: Petersen, Vilhelmine                   Stilling: Tyende (kv. by)
Alder: 20                                          Bestemmelsessted: Whitehall, Mich.

The one traveling to Whitehall, Michigan is the one I am interested in and am trying to track.
I don't know what else to do with this index.  Are there images of originals somewhere online?

I think "Albert" is later known to us as Peter A Petersen.
And the Carl will go by Carl Stein.  Both according to a 1920's will.
1900 Census, Chicago has Marie having 7 children but only 4 living
(Wilhelmina, Carl, Peter & Olga).

Marie b. abt. Oct 1842/1843 goes on to marry Christian Hansen - brother in law of
Wilhemina Hansen nee Petersen.

Thank You

The date of the Census 1880 is February 1. 1880.

Wilhelmine, Marie and Petersen are very common names in Denmark at that time.

The Census tells that this Wilhelmine Marie Petersen is born in Slagelse.

I am sorry, I do nok think that this is "your" Wilhelmine, since she left Denmark 1879.

Hi Brendon,

The 1880 census was taken 1 Feb. 1880, so it's not the same Vilhelmine.

Here's info about the Danish emigration database: http://www.emiarch.dk/info.php3?l=en

Inger,

Thank You very much.  I can not navigate the census as you have.
Your research appears accurate.  I will view the church books &
look for items to confirm I am finally on track with this branch of
our family.

I was thinking the name to follow a wife was her maiden name.
I would not have thought it was the town she was from -
"Bodil Marie født Breining"  - I never would have understood this.

I could not find any of this without your assistance.
I can't tell you how much your time & effort are
appreciated.

Most Thankful
Brendon Hansen

Inger Toudal

Hi Brendon,

It is odd that Bodil Marie is recorded as née Breining in the 1880 census - her maiden name is Hansdatter.

According to the 1880 census Bodil Marie and Niels Peter Petersen were married 1864 (All fields):

Source:    FT-1880
Name:    Bodil Marie født Breining   Sex:    K
Birth date:    37
Position in household:    husmoder   Marital status:    Gift
Birth place:    Breininge ved Kallundborg
Parish:    Gasværksvej   District:    København (Staden)
County:    København   Place name:    Udenbys Vester, Gasværkets
Household-/family no:    204
Married when:    1864   Living children:    7
Dead children:    3   Address:    Gasværksvej 29, baghuset
Title:    nr. 70 A. 4 J
Religion:    lutheran

As Wilhelmine was born before Bodil Marie married, I decided to take a look in the church book for Den Kongelige Fødselsstiftelse:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F%C3%B8dsels-_og_Plejestiftelsen

- and I found the birth of Mine Petersen (as she was baptized) - the mother is Bodil Marie Hansdatter :)

Diverse Menigheder, Diverse Menigheder, Den Kgl. Fødselsstiftelse 1859-1865, Opslag 30, No 8097.

The birth was also registered in Hovedprotokollen - the main protocol:

http://www.sa.dk/ao/billedviser?epid=16415216#50,38885 - No 8097

Mother 18 y old. Mine Petersen born 7 Mar. 1861, baptized 19 Mar. Transferred from the maternity institution to the 'caring' institution 16 Mar. Handed over to the mother (i.e. left the institution) 18 Mar. The institution stopped paying support to the mother 7 Mar. 1863.

Udsætterprotokollen (protocol where it's registered where the child went after leaving the institution):

http://www.sa.dk/ao/billedviser?epid=16415220#26,20360 - No 153

The mother is Bodil Marie Hansdatter, unmarried, hasn't given birth earlier, born 12 Oct. 1842 in Bregninge, from where she came to Copenhagen in Nov. 1859 and has served distiller [of spirits] Hougaard in Laksegade until 1 Nov. last year. She and the child were taken to Almindelig Hospital [hospital and institution for poor people].

The above mentioned protocols can be found at http://www.denjyskekirkebog.dk/FT/StiftelsenEP.htm

Nothing about the father!! But it must be a Petersen, since that's Mine's surname.

Again - Thank you Inger.  Wow!   This is something I never would have found.
I did not know those records existed.

I spent yesterday looking for Wilheminas birth in Vallekilde, Fårevejle, and Bregninge -
all those locations listed in the information you found for us, but I couldn't
find anything.

I was going to spend today trying to understand this area of Copenhagen, hoping to
find nearest church names & looking through those in hopes of finding Wilhelmina's birth.
København (Staden), Gasværksvej, Udenbys Vester, Gasværkets, nr. 70 A. 4 J,

Hi Brendon

Try this link for finding the parish/street. Just click Gade > sogn for the time frame you're looking in. Makes searching a lot easier :) http://www.landsarkivetkbh.dk/hovedst/txt/print/lister.htm

And here's a map of Copenhagen to help orient you to where the various parishes are located. For the parishes with numbers instead of names, just put your cursor over the number and the name of the parish will pop up. http://www.danishfamilysearch.com/amt12

Inger and Pamela,

Thank you both very much.

The links are extremely helpful.  Much better than how I dig up information on
my own.

The birth record for Mini is priceless - exactly the documents we needed to confirm
this family line and I honestly would never have found it.

I am slowly working on the information you provided.  Handwriting and not understanding
Danish or German makes the process difficult.  Thank goodness for you, this forum and
google translate.  ;)

Hi Brendon,

The death record you've found says Tobaksspinder ['tobacco worker'], gift, af Dannebrogsgade 33, 44 Aar.

He died at the municipal hospital Kommunehospitalet 1874-1886, opslag 74, no 130. Place of birth: Kjøge.

I think it's this man:

København, København (Staden), Dannebrogsgade, Udenbyes Vester, Skydebanens Rode, 234 rettet til 254, 181, FT-1880
Name:     Age:     Marital status:       Position in household:       Occupation:       Birth place:

Frederikke Petersen    14    Ugift          Kjøbenhavn
Carl Petersen    11    Ugift

ALL FIELDS:

In the emigration record August 1884, Marie Petersen is recorded as Hustru 'wife', so maybe former policeman Niels Peter Petersen wasn't dead at the time of Marie's emigration?

Thank You Inger,

Then that death is not him.   :-[

The "wife" listing on 1884 emigration confuses me.
She remarried once in USA - her USA husbands' will says they married in 1884.
We did not have her maiden name (or Bodil) during previous searches for this USA marriage.

I have to go back and recheck for Niels Peter & the oldest son in the emigration.
The 1880, 17 yr old August Petersen does end up in US.

I did just locate the confirmation record in the Skt Matthæus records for their
son Carl Lauritz Petersen. It only gives a birth date but doesn't give location or church.
It's April 1883  and lists father as "forman" Niels Peter Petersen.

I would think if the father was deceased that it would be recorded that way
but I don't see that.  So he was still alive in April of 1883. ? Well I'll see if this
narrows down where/when to look for him.

Also in the Skt Matthæus, I found a baptism Dec, 31, 1877 - from the 1880 census
it should be "Axel Emanuel    3    Ugift    søn       Do." but there is no name on the
baptism record.  They left Denmark before he would have been confirmed there.
I think he died in Denmark anyway.

The Skt Matthæus records only go back to 1877 so only a couple of their children
would be in these.  Some baptism & some their confirmations.

I'm slowing navigating the København records  ;D

Thank You again,
Brendon Hansen

Hi Brendon,

The 1880 census in detail (ALL FIELDS):

All information on selected person
Source:    FT-1880
Name:    Niels Peter Petersen   Sex:    M
Birth date:    43
Position in household:    husfader   Marital status:    Gift
Occupation:    afskediget overpolitimand   Birth place:    Hesselbjerg, Reersløv Sogn
Parish:    Gasværksvej   District:    København (Staden)
County:    København   Place name:    Udenbys Vester, Gasværkets
Household-/family no:    204
Married when:    1864   Living children:    7
Dead children:    3   Address:    Gasværksvej 29, baghuset

Title:    nr. 70 A. 4 J
Date moved [to Copenhagen]:    1854
Religion:    lutheran
Rent:    72

According to the church book, Axel Emmanuel Petersen was 4 3/4 yeas old, when he died 2 Apr. 1881, so he would have been born in 1876. He died after an accident where he was run over. The father is Arbeidsmand 'worker', and the family is living at the address Gasvei (Gasværksvej) 29.

The boy born 31 Dec. 1877 is seen in Skt Matthæus 1877-1879, opslag 87, no 478. The father is Brødhandler 'bread dealer', and the family is living at the address Absalonsgade 43 - but according to the remark, the mother was 23 y old, so probably not the right family.

In April 1883, Carl Lauritz Petersen (born or baptized do [= Kjøbenh.] 8 Mar. 1869) is listed as living at the address Thuresensgade 31 B, and his father is Niels Peter Petersen, Formand 'foreman'. On the same page, two fathers are listed as Afd. (afdød) 'late, deceased', so it seems that Carl Lauritz' father was alive in April 1883 (Skt Matthæus 1881-1885, opslag 40, no 60).

According to http://www.landsarkivetkbh.dk/hovedst/docs/sogneikbh.pdf and http://www.landsarkivetkbh.dk/hovedst/docs/sogne1880.pdf, you should look for records prior to 1877/1880 in the Frederiksberg church book, if the family was living in the area of Gas(værks)vej.

Records for persons living in Turesensgade should be found in Skt Johannes, according to http://www.landsarkivetkbh.dk/hovedst/docs/sogne1890.pdf

This could be the emigration record for the son August Petersen, 17 y, Blikkenslagersvend in FT-1880:

Name:    Petersen, Aug.   Occupation:    Blikkenslager [plumber, tinsmith]
Age:    23   Destination:    New York

Hi Inger,

Again Thank You.  That was so much information.  I am having such a difficult time with the
Copenhagen area and it's records.  All the details in a record that help one know if it could be
the correct family - like the fathers occupation - I am unable to use this as I can not read
the hand writing well enough to type it into google translate.  The addresses too as the maps
and names & locations are all very unfamiliar to me.

I am navigating this area very slowly.

So the Axel death is not correct but the confirmation for Carl Lauritz is.

This " records prior to 1877/1880 in the Frederiksberg church book, if the family was living
in the area of Gas(værks)vej."

This " Afd. (afdød) 'late, deceased'"

This "Carl Lauritz Petersen (born or baptized do [= Kjøbenh.] 8 Mar. 1869) is listed as living at the address Thuresensgade 31 B,"
"Records for persons living in Turesensgade should be found in Skt Johannes"

These items and information - thank you for sharing your knowledge.

And the records for August Petersen - again, Thank You so much. I don't think I would
have found those.  This added information will help me trace him.

I will follow your leads and continue trying to put this family branch in order.

I can not express just how much your help is appreciated.

Sincerely,
Brendon Hansen

Inger Toudal

Hi again,

I think you found the death of the right Axel Emmanuel, aged 3 in the 1880 census. The name of the father and the address correspond to the census. The former policeman is now making a living as a worker. By 1883 he has been promoted to foreman.

I'm not quite sure whether it's only Carl Lauritz who's living in Turesensgade in 1883, or the whole family. He could be working as a servant, but I should think he's still living with the family, as he's just turned 14.

Best regards,
Inger T.
