I am trying to figure out the possible dates for migration of Nichlous P Thomsen or Niels P Thomsen or  a variation from the Haderslev or Jels area (b. abt 1867) to New York, NY USA .   I thought the migration was about 1897 or so (first US Census was 1900) but I am not sure.   Family lore said he migrated via Bremenhaven or Hamburg but not sure.  He was a farm laborer.

I looked at the Danish archives  immigration buy no  match.   ON blogger at this sight showed me a good match but it said that his job was "Baker" and that he came in 1880's.  I do not think he was that young.

Any leads would be helpful.

This baker Niels Thomsen  found on Castle Garden (link) is born in

Haderslev county, Haderslev, Grarup parish - churchbook 1851-1884 opslag 30 no 14

(At this time Haderslev was Germany) It went back to Denmark in 1920

Born september 2 - 1867 and baptised september 29 - 1867
parents Thomas Thomsen in Soegaard (a big farm) and wife Maren born Borva 27 years old (mothers age)

It might be your Nicholas - the age seems to match.

Hope this can help you.

Do you know the parents names of your Nicholas??

Bente:  Thank you for the posts.   The US census  records are the correct ones.  I agree with the  1867 as a possible  birthdate, with parents of Thomas and Marie (Maren?).  Marie's maiden name from other bloggers was Ravn  The immigration date of 1888 is questionable, especially the part of being a "baker."    Could that be a mistake by the US immigration folks.  My grandfather always works on farms in the United States, as a laborer.   And his family in Denmark was into farming.

From Danish records, any other possibilities for Nicholas to have migrated in the 1890's?

Tak

Gary

We shall not always believe in Census. They are transcripted and the typers could make a reading mistake or the person could tell a fake story like he was a baker in stead of farm labour.

Mother Maren or Marie last name was hard to read in the churchbook but it could be RAVN.

This Niels Thomsen´s father Thomas was a farm labour man working on the farm named SØGAARD.

Castle Garden tells that he left from Hamburg, Germany by ship.

Have you checked your possibilities for Nicholas birth date and year.

I´m convinced that this Niels is the right one.

I hope local friendly danish helpers can help further.
