(1)  What was the military obligation for men during the 1840's?

My Grt-grandfather, Jens Christensen, was born in Vindeby, Maribo amt in 1824. He was an enlisted man and served in the 4th Linie Infanteri Bataillon from 30 May 1847 to 23 April 1848.  He lost his right leg in battle on 23 April 1848 and was captured near Slesvig.  He was taken to the Prussian military hospital in the Prinsens Palæ in Slesvig.  By 19 August 1849 he married my Grt-grandmother in Vor Frelsers Kirke in København and was identified as a laborer.  By 1850 they were living in Vindeby.

(2) Would anyone know if seriously injured soldiers were sent to a København hospital for further treatment or rehabilitation during the war?

Thanks, Rog Nelson

2) If you know where (county and district) he was living in 1876, you may find his application for the medal granted to participants in the 1848-1850 war here:

http://www.denjyskekirkebog.dk/FT/MedaljerBS.htm

The applications also include information about hospitals where wounded soldiers had stayed.

I found this page with information about military hospitals 1848-1850 and 1864 in Copenhagen and other cities:
