I am trying to track down my great grandfather Jens Peter Laursen. In my grandmother's birth entry, he is identified and a location is associated with him:

It is interesting to note that it indicates that Jens Peter and Anna are married although I have not been able to locate a marriage.

From these two sources I get Jens Peter Laursen's approximate birth year, about 1860, and that he was living in Østergaard when my grandmother was born.

I located a 1860 Census for Aarhus with a Jens Peter Laursen as a 1 year old child:

My questions are:
1)   Is there a database where one can determine when someone was released from the military? My grandmother's birth entry states that her alleged father was Tjener.
2)   Is there a way to determine which Østergaard he was from as there are 4 Østergaards in Aarhus Amt?
3)   ANY OPINIONS-----IS THIS MY JENS PETER LAURSEN??????

Any feedback and opinions would be appreciated----thank you....

Hi Lynn

I don't know if you are aware, but the baptism of Marie Jensine Hansen is also listed in the churchrecords for Vor Frue, as she is baptised in Vor Frue. In this record the witnesses are stated.

Århus Vor Frue, Hasle, Århus. Ny udgave. View 291.

Ellen---

I am aware of that https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1971-33689-4025-10?cc=2078555&wc=M943-TX2:n1230170257 and found it interesting that she would be entered in BOTH the DomSogn and Vor Frue parish registers with different comments in the Remarks column.

Unfortunately, neither provide a lot of data on her father.

Hence, at this time my grandmother's paternal line stops at only knowing his name and a few details. Based on those details and subsequent Census information taken in Iowa in 1925 I am trying to determine who he might be.

Any help would be appreciated....Thank you....

Hi Lynn
I'm not an expert on military records, but this could be your Jens Peter Laursen:
http://www.sa.dk/ao/billedviser?epid=16480943#19610,1525259
The record states he is drafted for the 20 Bte (which is the same as in the census) and dismissed on 30/7 80 (July 30th 1880).

As for the occupation and the location, since the word 'tjener' is used (and not 'tjenende') it indicates that he is a domestic servant and not just a farmhand. The location could therefore be the manor Østergaard http://www.danskeherregaarde.dk/manorholder/oe/oestergaard-%28aarhus%29/ejerhistorie.aspx which is in Thulstrup parish.

Thank you Ellen---

Can any one identify and explain the hand written comments in the Bedtegninger section?

Hi Lynn
As I can find out the E.K.5 means he has been drafted for the Infratry (in 1879).

5/9 84 Utspas means that on Sep 5th 84 he is 'unfit/unable to service'.
Teoretically that could be due to age - but normally that would not happen before he was 38 years old.
But it does tell us that in 84 he stil belong to the list in the same parish.

Hi Lynn
I do not think your great grandparents were married.

Marie's konfirmation is in the Churchrecords for Århus Vor Frue:

Århus Vor Frue 1896-1900, Konfirmation 1897.
View 67 nr. 23.
Marie Jensine Hansen
Parents: Ugift [unmarried] Anna Dorthea Hansen, Møllesti 35.
Birth/Baptism: Domsogn 25. januar 1883, 18. februar 1883. Fremst. i Frue Kirke 7. Oktober 1883

If they had been married - even after her baptism - they would both have been listed under parents.

Thank you Ellen---

I could not find a marriage entry and your statement regarding the Confirmation information sort of confirms to me that they did not as the Confirmation took place some 14 years after her birth. One would think that they would have married by then IF they did marry.

I doubt it though.

Again, Thank you for your feedback and insight....

John Damm Sørensen

Hi,

I think the key to find Jens Peter Laursen lays in "Østergaard Teglg" which translates to Østergaards Brickworks.

The Danish Brickworks are well documented and the only Østergaards Brickworks is one in the Vellev Parish in Viborg County.

The Jens Peter Laursen from the 1860 census was born in Sjelle Parish and you find him in the lookup #21 in the church records from 1853-1881 Sjelle, Framlev, Aarhus. He was born March 21, 1859.

Best
John
