Birthe Marie Jensdatter, Laurs spouse, was born in Stjær, Aarhus Amt as stated in the 1860 Census. 3rd Great Grandparents-

I am trying to locate Søren Nielsen, my 3rd Great Grandfather. From the 1787 and 1801 Census for Viborg I find him as a child in the home of his parents. I have located his death 7 Feb 1852 in Balle: 1846-1863 Balle, Hids, Viborg Ny udgave img 115 pg 116-#2, also at: http://www.danishfamilysearch.com/sogn1948/churchbook/source130986/opslag14010904

I have not found a birth entry.

I have located marriages for 3 possible Søren Nielsens' in the Balle registers:

1-1808 Marriage of Soren Nielsen and Anne Jensdatter 1742-1813 Balle img 107 2nd column top
2-1812 Marriage of Soren Nielsen and Anna Margrethe Nielsdatter 1742-1813 Balle img 107 3rd Column #1812-#1
3- 1813 Marriage of Soren Nielsen and Else Sorensdatter 1742-1813 Balle img 107 4th column last entry

None for Søren Nielsen and Ane Laursdatter.


Ane Laursdatter

For her I have a Baptism date of 18 Sep 1791 but have not been able to locate an entry in the Balle Parish Registers.

I have not pursued the 3rd Great Grandparents on the Maternal side as I want to concentrate on the Paternal side first.

Any help that anyone can provide me would be greatly appreciated. It took almost 40 years of effort to locate and document my Great Grandfather Jens Peder Laursen...

His confirmation also lists his mother as Anna Laursdatter, probably taken from the birth record.  Found in register 1831-1865, 'opslag'/lookup 12 #8. 

'Laursdatter' begins to look like an entry error.

I also had concerns about "Laursdatter", but had preliminarily dismissed my concerns due to the fact that their son was named "Laurs".

Is there a way to determine that Laursdatter is incorrect and that possibly Jensdatter is the proper Surname?

If it is a misnomer and the mother's Surname should be "Jensdatter" then I have located a possible birth entry for her at 1742-1813 Balle, Hids, Viborg Ny udgave img 54 pg 96 #bottom of 3rd column:

The other children of Søren Nielsen in the 1834 census: Niels, opslag 13 #5; Anders 21 #1; Mette 89 #6 have Anne Jensdatter listed as their mother. 

This would be easier to fit together if you had Lars's marriage to Birthe Marie.  They were apparently not married in her birth parish, Stjær.

The marriage and the confirmation have the same vaccination date, 25 May 1835.  That lessens the doubt that you had the wrong birth for one reason or another.

You may be able to find the 'indtegning til ægteskab' for the marriage in the unused pages of the register set aside in 1814.  But it won't help with the question of his mother's surname.

Thank you Ralph---I have done similar comparisons as you indicated in the past but the "light bulb" did not light until you stated the obvious logic.

Regarding the Surname, I looked at the original script and it is "Larsdatter". I am saying to myself: "I wonder if the writer having heard Lars' name had it stuck in his mind and simply wrote "Larsdatter" as the mother's name". All other record entries found to date point to her surname as "Jensdatter".
